It's good to hear from someone on the Schiavo side of the story. Has this guy been doing much speaking out?

They're trying to respect Terri's privacy.

158. wow, respecting Terri
is that allowed?

I am so damned fed up with the "you're starving her" crowd that I just want to fly down to Florida and slap them all simple-minded... and then I think, wasted airfare, they're already simple-minded. Michael Schiavo isn't trying to murder his wife, he's trying to respect her wishes, and it's the only thing left anyone can really do for her... or should do for her, IMHO.

14. He laid it out so clearly
No one seems to mention or even care that the husband is grieving also. Just because he has moved on with his life does not mean that he has no feelings for her. Sometimes letting go is the greatest act of love.

This whole thing is so sad. The worst part is how shameful our government (Republicans) have been about making it into a political issue.

17. My family went through something
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 08:21 PM by Greylyn58
similar in 1994 with my Uncle(mom's only brother). He went in for gall-bladder surgery and suffered a massive stroke after-wards that rendered him brain-dead

IF ANY OF THESE BASTARDS had tried to insert themselves into my family's painful decision over taking him off of life-support I think I would have beat them senseless.

Everyday I hear this crap and hear these crazies going on and on about Michael Schiavo killing his wife makes me want to :puke:

This should have been a private personal family decision and never should have seen the light of day.

:grr: :grr:

32. I have a similar story
My half-brother was hit by a car in Florida several years ago. The accident resulted in severe brain damage.

My brother had been living with his girlfriend for several years, but they decided not to get married. After the accident, the doctors attempted several operations before informing the family that he would never regain consciousness.

The mother wanted to disconnect him from life support, and the girlfriend wanted to wait. Well, the girlfriend did not have any legal standing, so he was removed from life support and passed away just days after the accident.

It was a very painful situation, but it was a "private" matter. I can not imagine the government prying itself into such a painful and personal time.

Where did that pic come from?

AND, might I point out - he's wearing orange.

Job hunt is still kind of stalled. Spent last night with a friend redoing my resume for a job at ORNL, where he works (he's recommending me) and spent today at the welfare office putting my son on TennCare (all uninsured children can get on TennCare) and applying for food stamps for later (if it comes to that).

That welfare thing is a drag. Went through it after an accident, when I couldn't work.

They give you food stamps -- then deduct the value of the food stamps from your welfare check because... well, it's INCOME, isn't it???! Drove me nuts.

30. I agree, but you know how well honesty is received in this heightened,
hysterical atmosphere. Did you see the cross with stigmata and blood with Terry's name on the top of it, probably brought by one of the protesters. If this lady dies on Easter weekend you've got to know the fundaholics will go crazy, they will positively froth at the mouth with 'born-again religious' fervor. They will have their martyr at any cost.

This is so sad. My mom lives in Pinellas Park and works in the hospice thrift store down there. She know some of the nurses that work at the hospice where Terry Schiavo is. They are so upset, can't even park their cars in peace to get inside to do their jobs giving comfort to the other poor souls trying to end their lives with some amount of dignity.

I have both nights on tape and I haven't watched either of them. I didn't tape tonight's results show because I figured it would be pretty easy to find out who was voted off (and nobody, tell me, k?). Maybe this weekend I'll sit down and watch.

I hope it's Mikelah, even though I haven't seen her this week. She's a one trick pony and I don't think the country's gonna stand for a bad Barbra impersonator much longer. Trach Boy wasn't on key for the past few weeks and he's gonna get really boring, really fast.

If it's Nadia, and let's hope not, then she will be fine and receive either a recording contract or acting role in the very near future. Trust me, she'll be fine.

Hey, bunny! So nice to see you here. It's actually been a long time since we've all been together for a thread! I wonder what happened to gk, lw, and Miami Liberal. Was it something I said? Was it something you said? :)

177. what happened the other day was bad enough
although I'm far enough away not to have been personally affected -- probably 25-30 miles as the crow flies, much longer if you have to actually use the freeways :o

What worries me is that the plants over there are aging, and with blivet** and his friends in power, the inspections and safety regs are becoming more lax when they need to be more rigorous. Old equipment and half-assed inspections and complexes full of toxic and/or flammable chemicals? I'm seeing a real shit-and-fan moment coming down the pike, and what happened the other day was just a preview for a coming attraction. I'm hoping it will be enough of a wake-up call that BP and the other companies will see the writing on the wall, but I know that's wishful thinking. That particular plant has had several problems in the past few years. Who needs terrorists when you have shortsighted businessmen willing to do the job for you?

First it was saving Santa by getting him a flu shot.
Then it was his consistant defense of Spongebob.
Now, it's the T-Rex story. Ramzey LOVES dinosaur and we had been talking about this story earlier. When Keith started in with his comparison to "Jurassic Park,' Ramzey was excited! (I just had to ask my 5-year-old son how to spell "Jurassic" - LOL!)

49. "Sleeper"! Did you know:

Trivia for
Sleeper (1973)

* Woody Allen confirmed the scientific feasibility of his screenplay ideas in a single lunchtime meeting with Isaac Asimov.

* The rebels' anthem is the same one used in Bananas (1971).

* The voice of the evil computer is that of Douglas Rain, parodying his role as the voice of HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

And don't forget the part where they mention that the healthiest foods are chocolate and red meat, "exactly the opposite of what your scientists believed!" Right again.

$200 for acupuncture? MY acupuncturist only charges $40.

And, yes, healing *can* work. But it's certainly not restricted to Christian faiths. Many Buddhists report "miraculous" cures, and what about that witchdoctor faith healer in the Phillipines?

87. I have acupuncture regularly. It definitely works on many conditions
as has been shown in recent bliinded clinical trials. Pain of verious kinds is one of the things that responds well. So does arthitis and pregancy-asociated nausea. It can also relax stress and increase energy level. It should NOT cost $200 a treatment. A standard charge for an hour treatment in the Boston area by professional (as opposed to a student at an acupuncture school) is about $70-75.

There are at least two types - Japanese and Chinese styles. The Japanese style involves more shallow needle settings...I can go into it if you are interested. I look forward to my treatments, they are very pleasant experiences and I am always energized and relaxed afterwards. And it definitely has helped the physical issues I started it for.

89. I did not know about the Japanese and Chinese!
My acupuncturist is Korean. I suspect he does the Chinese style since he is also a Chinese herbalist. What's the difference?

He also does moxa. Have you ever had that? I've never, ever opened my eyes when I had it done -- the idea wigs me -- but damn, it works.

94. Chinese style is deeper needles. Yes, I have moxa all the time
She gave me some handy stick-on ones and showed me a few key points so I can do it at home (in a ventilated place) too. You don't leave the moxa until it HURTS. You put it on the chosen acupuncture points until it just begins to almost hurt, then you take it off and either stop or replace it with a fresh one. It's very easy and it does work. Doesn't hurt.

My acupucturist is trained in both basic styles, but she says all her patients except one woman prefer the Japanese style, where the needles go in only 1-2 mm. The exception is a very robust, extremely physical woman who says she likes the huge surge from the Chinese style. My acupuncturist says the Japanese style is more like subtle waves that gradually build - they both get to the same place and both use the same points.

Yes, it definiitely works. I've had some pretty dramatic results myself and have lots of stories I could tell.

And yes, I was actually collecting workman's comp and was thisclose to considering disability. That's why I tried it... I was in so much pain I'd have gone to a witch doctor at that point!

Plus, $40 a pop -- it's totally worth a try, right?

106. Nope, no electricity for mine. She does sometimes hook up the wire,
but she doesn't add the electricity. It's an experimental thing, she explained it to me. Most of the time she sticks with the needles and the moxa. Totally worth a try for sure.

I also sometimes have shiatsu massage, which uses the same meridians but different techniques. Talk about bliss city afterward!

128. Takes special training. I can recommend it highly.
If you have it, it's a good idea to try to arrange for the time after the seesion to be "easy," ideally a quiet time in a natural place. Basically you want a little time for the treatment to "set" - if you rush right back into a high-stress situation you won't have all the benefits. To some extent that's true for acupuncture too, but not to the same extent.

Shiatsu is less for pain and more for anxiety and low energy in my experience. After a session you feel wonderfully relaxed and expanded in the sense of opposition to being all wound up tight in a hunched, anxious state.

159. it's good for morning sickness?
damn, if I ever get knocked up again, I've got to go for the acupuncture, then. I had morning sickness from two weeks after conception right up until delivery and it sucked big green donkey dicks. I tried the "seasickness" wrist bands but they didn't do jack. Nothing helped. Only good news was that it was more nausea than actual barfing so I eventually gained some weight after the fifth month. I had a friend who actually lost weight during her pregnancies and she was about the only thing that kept me going during my little joyride.

161. Yup, there was a clinical study for it. Worked better than the meds,
but without side effects or drugs.

I had morning sickness basically 24/7 for the first 4 months. Couldn't ride the subway because of the smell, kept losing weight when I was supposed to be getting big. Finally magically disappeared, almost overnight. What a relief! Wish I had known about acupuncture's effectiveness back then.

If you find yourself getting most of your news from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and feel guilty about not living up to your civic duty of being an informed citizen, I highly recommend watching Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC. I've been a fan of Olbermann's ever since The Big Show on MSNBC, and if you ever watched Sports Night, you saw a close analog to Olbermann's time hosting ESPN's SportsCenter. The format reminds one of a sports highlight reel, with snark and attitude-- the highlight from the Michael Jackson trial re-enacted by puppets being just the latest example.

All you do is give the site your email to confirm your comments - it doesn't post your email addy.
I'm already there!
I'll post this in our clubhouse, too!

I watch very little TV and get my news from the internet. I don't WANT to watch a lot of TV, so if I got cable it would be only for that one show. Even for Keef, that's a big investment!

Tapes are so cheap (99-cents at BigLots).

You could even use the same couple of tapes over and over; each time you picked one up, hand over the previous one for taping. Do you have a VCR?

(Not being pushy... I just couldn't do without Countdown, myself, and certainly WOULD get cable just for that one show!!! $60/month divided by 20-shows/month comes to $3 a show!)

107. $60/month is a lot! I'd rather buy books
Besides, I can read the transcripts on the Countdown site the day after the show. I don't like the feeling I have when I watch more than an absolute minimum of TV.

I don't have any close friends who are into Countdown, so I don't want to ask them to tape it. it would be a hassle for them. The KOEB, the newsletter, and the transcript are enough.

132. My butt's getting wider in this computer chair, too!
But I have found that I really can't bear the commercials and shrillness of most TV. It makes me anxious in way that is the opposite of the way I want to feel. Like all my nerves are exposed and being trod on by the endlessly eager-sounding announcers.

When I turn it on for a specific program, I am freshly amazed at how awful a lot of it is. Guess I've lost my accllimation to it in my years without it. It used to just be a friendly voice in the background, but not any longer. I resent the intrusion.

130. yea, I don't watch much TV myself
because I have a horrible tendency to get addicted, and then I get into fullblown CAN'T MISS MY SHOW mode. Thankfully the only things on the addiction list right now are Countdown, which reruns at midnight, when I'm always home, and Battlestar Galactica, and I don't like going out on Fridays anyway.

But, damn, when X-Files or Buffy were on in first run, I was AWFUL about being planted in front of the TV. :7 I don't channelsurf much. But HGTV is truly awesome video wallpaper.

133. If I ever get a big TV I'll probably go for cable then
For now I have a very small TV that is not a pleasure to watch. Silly to pay so much for the plasma TVs, and the HDTV stuff is coming, so I'll just wait a bit longer.

My new computer, now, has a glorious bright vivid 20 inch wide flat screen, and I LOVE it.

146. Yeah, my little TV died about a year or two ago.
My new one is not a plasma screen, but it is a flat picture tube, which is a little more than the regular picture tube, but well worth it and quite clear and crisp looking. SO nice. my previous TV was so old it had no remote! Bwah!

157. My only TV is a little one (by today's standards) that is so old that
the ones at yard sales are nicer! The remote was lost long ago and the replacement, Radio Shack one recently decided to retire - changing the batteries did not revive it. Since the TV is intended to work with a remote, it's a real pain to deal with the thing. Fortunately I usuallly only have to put it on Channel 3 for the VCR/DVD connection and manually adjust the volume.

One of these days I'll finally get a good TV and kick myself for not doing it sooner, but the prices on the new ones are still dropping. Easier to abstain with my gorgeous new computer to play with instead.

BTW, I never told you, I love your blog. I really admire your political involvement. I'm just getting started doing that myself here and it's easier because I live in a liberal blue oasis, you are fighting in a red state with the BUGKILLER in power. I've started attending Environmental Commission meetings and joined some Green organizations (though not the Green party). I marched against the war on March 19th here in town. It was a great gathering. Met some people involved in a Progressive group in Newark and I think I'm going to start attending some of their meetings. Their speaker was AWESOME, he brought tears to our eyes.

Ferrets turn things upside down, do not believe anything should be out of reach and should they figure how to reach it , it will be on the floor with in seconds. They hate the clock radio (or love it) and try to stash it under the bed regularly. They also change the time on it when ever hub is home. (I used the TV for an alarm clock for a reason)
