2. Are you trying to imply
that everyone in a red state are bigots and racists that want to bring back slavery? Just because I live in Texas doesn't mean I where a white hood.

3. Welcome to DU
Pharrett,

As a Texan I agree that it's not great to be included in the "red" masses. But the map does have a message.

and Welcome to DU....

prepare for a wide range of views.

I'm not sure what the implication is.....
either. Have lived in a "red" state -- and folks while were out it to me this red state/blue state thing just makes us more divided.

5. I live in a Red State as well
I just thought the map was interesting since I'm a historian who specializes in Antebellum Political History.

6. What would really be something....
is to do a visual comparison of how these states voted over the years in each presidential election since Reconstruction - discount the 1864 election since it was an anomly (south didn't vote for US President that year) or the 1880 presidential election.

7. Well they voted Democrat

from 1880-1928 and when I say they, I mean every single Southern State went Dem in those years. In 1924 KY went Republican and in 1928 so did Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Tennessee. They then went all Democrat from 1932-1944 (4 Southern states went for Thurmond in '48 with the rest going Democrat). In 1952 Stevenson won every Southern state except Florida, Tennessee, Virginia and Texas and the same in '56 except Louisiana went Eisenhower as well. Kennedy carried the South except Florida, Virgina, Kentucky and Tennessee in 1960. In 1964 Goldwater carried much of the Deep South with Johsnon getting the Upper South. In 1968 Wallace split the South with Nixon.

So in the 60's is when the South made the switch from strongly Democrat to strongly Repblican although this is misleading since Carter won the South in '76 and some of it in '80 and so did Clinton in '92 and '96 which only fuels the Democrats need a Southerner to win the South argument.
