Great performances, great script ... really great movie all-round. Dysfunctional family drama wrapped up in the coolest, grooviest wedding weekend you will EVER see on film (you just want to be a member of this family's extended family or tribe).
Anne Hathaway (and Rosemarie Dewitt, who plays Rachel) rock, rock, rock the screen. And you'll see a wonderful, subtle performance by Debra Winger (and you'll yearn to see more of her). Bill Irwin, Anna Devere Smith ... the whole clan just rocks.
SEE IT IF YOU GET THE CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!
This movie and "The Visitor" are the best movies of the year, so far, for me.

2. We walked out. The hand held camera was making me nauseous. |
|
Plus I couldn't stand the protagonist - spoiled brat, etc.

3. I'm sorry you walked out. You missed a lot of information about the protagonist. |
|
"Spoiled brat" is only one layer of her character. And have you ever known any addicts? ... complete self-centeredness is often an aspect of their disease.
And you find out some devastating information later in the movie that might offer deeper understanding, even if you still found her annoying.
I got used to the hand-held camera, but I can understand it making some people nauseous.

4. What is it with hand held cameras. |
|
Tripods are certainly cheap enough.
"Harold and Maude" was made on a shoe string budget, but the camera work on that film was excellent.
That being said, I'll buy some Dramamine and try and watch Rachel.

6. I loved Rachel Getting Married as well. |
|
I saw it with my film group, and for a while now I've had a soft spot in my heart for Anne Hathaway, who is turning out to be one of the great talents of the our generation. She seemed to have a terrific start in light comedies, but her dramatic work has just taken me by surprise.
It was every bit as good as I thought it would be, and despite it being a tragic film of the buried secrets that rise to the surface during a major family event, I loved how the dialog and the story and even such details as the background artistic design and the work on costumes presented a detailed world so true it really felt like witnessing a real family going through the same circumstances. Bit parts were even wonderfully cast. It made me teary eyed at some moments.
Another thing that stood out was that Debra Winger has not lost her ability to capture an audience on screen. When she appeared, it was impossible to look at anything else. She is a lot like her persona in this film; mercurial, quick to change emotion, luminous, and quite beautiful.
Thanks for posting about this movie.
