The most well known Utillitarian, the 19th century british philospher and reformer J. S. Mill, was a vocal proponent of social justice for the poor and opressed. He and his allies were on of the reasons of the ideologocal split among 19th century liberals that eventually resulted in the crystalizing of the ideologies of Social Democrats/American Liberals on one hand and Libertarians on the other.
