So, how's your NFL team doing in free agency? |

1. Redskins fairly well, but a big loss |
|
The 'Skins got David Patten from NE and they traded L. Coles to the Jets for Santana Moss. They also signed a good center, which should help the o-line a lot.
Unfortunately, they lost Fred Smoot, a great corner to the Vikings. Hopefully they will still have Greg Williams as D coordinator next year, because he was able to get great performances from the no-names.

The Skins will be paying more than 25% of their salary next year to people who will not be playing next year (Coles, Trotter, Barrow, a couple other players, and Brunell ). The Skins lost their best performing LB, WR (and they gave up their 2nd receiver too), and CB (this is arguable since Springs performed well also last year). What have the Skins gotten? Moss who is a great deep threat, but if they try to play him like they did Coles last year, then he'll be destroyed. Patten would make a good third WR, but Patten and Moss are a pathetic duo, especially considering the lack of receiving talent at TE. The Skins need to get Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards in the draft, but they also desperately need a very good CB; Braylon and Mike will likely be both gone before the Skins can draft either of them considering that the Vikes have seemed to shore up their D pretty well and need a big play WR. The Skins also need to improve the interior of their OL, they could use another LB in the draft, and oh yeah they need someone at DE. The Skins don't have a lot of cap room left, and will probably only get 2 quality players from the draft, and when all is said and done, the Skins will still not have a decent QB. :)
Oh and the Cowboys had the best offseason so far.

10. The Redskins D finished 3rd in the NFL |
|
They still have Marcus Washington, who went to the Pro Bowl, Arrington is coming off injury, you know, Lavar Arrington, they guy who gave Aikman his last concussion? I'm sure you remember that. They have a bunch of no-names, and still finished 3rd on D. Isn't that about where the great Dallas D was expected to finish?
The got Casey Rabach, the best center available in free agency.
Their tight end, Chris Cooley just made 6 tds last season. Is that a lack of receiving threat??
You say Patten and Moss are pathetic as a duo, but have yet to see them perform. We will see that when the season starts, along with whether the Cowboys had the best offseason, which was not the question asked in the original post.
I am sure the Cowboys can get a few Refs to make some calls for them with any money they have left over from the draft and free agency. We will also see if Bledsoe is used up, or if the Cowboys will continue their QB carousel, just like the Redskins have.

16. Yep 3rd best D in the NFL with about the 3rd easiest schedule too. |
|
I think the Skins will still have a good D, but probably more like 10th best in the NFL or a little worse (this is assuming they get a good corner in the draft). The big thing is that the Skins still need a good possesion receiver if they want to improve their O, but they need a really good corner too. I just think their offense will perform about the same, and their D will perform worse. It's not all that farfetched.
Oh and Bledsoe won more games last year than both of our teams, so I feel confident he'll be an improvement over Vinny.
BTW, Cooley is listed as a running back :P. 6 TD's is nice (just one shy than Portis had receiving+rushing), but 314 yards? Pah!

|
Don't forget the guy who coaches the Redskins has 2 more rings than your guy, and none of them came with a HOF caliber QB. Broken Leg Joe was the closest thing he had to one. If anyone can take a team of scrubs and turn it into something, it is Joe Gibbs.

He has two(forgot about 90), Gibbs has 3.
As if Jerry Jones hasn't overpaid for players.

I was just pointing out your mistake in the difference between the number of rings that Bill and Joe had. For Joe to have two more rings, he'd have to have four total.
Yes Jerry has overpaid for players, but he hasn't showed the utter incompetence that Danny Boy has shown every single year in the offseason.

From what I would hear them say, he was able to read plays very well, and would give his teammates heads up on what a play would be.
I am hoping the NFC will be better this year. I liked it when for a few years the Super Bowl Champ was out of the NFC East. (I liked it most when it was the Redskins, but hey, somebody else has to have a chance.)

The guys we got are pretty decent, though. You never seem to know anything until the season starts. I think Pierce was undrafted, and look how he played. There are always teams nobody expects to do well who win a lot of games. I suppose that is why free agency is a good thing.

2. The Bucs don't have any money left under the cap. |
|
They can't even talk to anyone. They are going to have to make more cuts just to have enough room under the cap to sign their draft picks. They're screwed. They will be lucky to win more than five or six games this season.

3. Eagles resigned Trotter, Westbrook |
|
For a team with no glaring needs, the priority is resigning the core. And Corey Simon, who was franchised. Birds are primed for a return to the big dance. If they can find a stud running back in the draft, then there will be nothing stopping them. Judging by the turnover in NE, the patriots are looking to take the year to retool for 06, so it looks like the birds will be handed Superbowl 40.

15. We won't miss him, we have Shaun Andrews. |
|
He's going to be a force. As far as Mayberry at tackle, I don't know. He is an above average guard when healthy but I don't know how he'll fare against the speed rushers on the end. His health has been an issue the past three seasons, he's missed at least a few games in each and was out for the 2003 season with a torn triceps. If he stays healthy he's an upgrade for you but not near a pro-bowl caliber tackle.

edit: an afterthought, the Saints seem to love these flexible linemen for some reason... probably not a bad move considering how much attention they'll be paying to the D come draft day. Hope he works out.

Mayberry is blind in one eye and started the Eagles eye-mobile which provides free eye exams and prescriptions to under privileged people. He's a really good guy and the community will miss him.

11. Trotter played well last year |
|
Being a 'Skin fan, I admit I was rooting for NE in the Super Bowl, but I was disappointed in the last few minutes of play by the Eagles. I have seen them come back all the time, but they just didn't show any sense of urgency at all. I was very surprised at that, since it took them a while to get there. I think if I was an Eagle fan I would have been cussing at the TV.
I hope the NFC is a little more competitive than it has been the last few seasons. I always like to see a couple of teams come from nowhere. Someday the Cards might win it all...LOL.

He played hard. The 'Skins have been known to scalp a few players as well, though. They lost so much on that Coles deal, they probably didn't have enough to offer Smoot more.

Smoot, Williams, Harris, and now trying to swing a deal for Darius - crap, the Vikings might have just made themselves a powerhouse on defense overnight.
Losing Moss might cost us up to a touchdown a game, but these guys could save us a touchdown (or more) per game.

14. Moss was amazing when he wanted to be |
|
He made some crazy catches, and sometimes he would just half-ass it. He did well by hanging in when he was injured in the playoffs, though. I would find it hard to pay him the kind of money you would without being sure he was always going to give 100 percent. He will probably already be HOF material, but would blow about every record in the book if he wanted to.

9. The Bengals haven't gone after anybody... |
|
...'cause they don't have any cap space. All they could do was re-sign their own free agents - most importantly Rudi Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzedah, plus their center and a couple special teams aces.
All of their money is tied up in Palmer and Chad Johnson, and now Rudi. If Warrick comes back healthy next year, and Chris Perry can kick this sports hernia, their offense will be killer next year.
Defense is still a question mark, especially against the run. Their pass defense should be solid. I think 6 or 7 rookies on defense got tons of playing time due to injuries last year, so that's a plus.
I think they'll go for a DL in the draft in 1st round (17th pick), that's what they need most. But Marvin Lewis' philosophy in the draft is pick the best player available, period. The only exceptions are quarterback and running back - they'll take any other position though. Should be interesting.

35. well, we lost a couple of the better of our (already) weak defense |
|
sharper and jue out for the packers. also lost two of the best offensive lineman in the league in mike wahle and marco rivera (who just underwent some serious back surgery apparently, so maybe it's not so bad we lost him). but favre is sticking around for at least another year, and we've got jim bates in from miami to lead our defense this year...so who knows what'll happen. if the offensive line can stay as good as it was last year (despite the loss of wahle and rivera...which isn't likely), and bates can get a halfway decent defense together then the packers have a good shot of going far.
