It's called the LOMBARDI trophy |
|
Not the Halas trophy or the Landry trophy or any other guy. Named after the greatest coach in NFL history.

1. There's another aspect to it |
|
It's called the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Not the Don Coryell Trophy.
There's a reason for that. And the Great Protector rose again tonight. Finesse is doomed in a sport that is physical in its essence.
As much as I respect the Patriots and really didn't want to root against them other than preserving the 1972 Dolphins as unique and legendary, there's no doubt they have over rotated too much in the past few years. The Giants were rewarded as the more physical team, the one more willing to explore the running game.
Run the ball often. Pass the ball well. New England increasingly tried to ignore the first part of the equation and was burned tonight. Brady was literally knocked off his feet more often tonight than Bob Griese attempted passes in TWO straight Super Bowls combined, the '72 and '73 seasons.
I couldn't think of a more fitting image of a finesse team than having the glory QB smacked into the air and planted on his ass in the final seconds, desperately calling time out.

2. And Lombardi Was A Coach For The Giants Before He Came To Green Bay |
|
It might be a stretch, but it gives me some consolation. Again, congratulations to the Giants! Awesome win guys!

Lombardi was offensive coordinator and Tom Landry was defensive coordinator under Jim Lee Howell when the Colts played the Giants in "The Greatest Game Ever Played" -- the 1958 sudden death NFL championship. But despite that combined brain trust, the Colts still won.
Howell had virtually nothing to do with the day-to-day coaching of the Giants, but the Maras wouldn't get rid of him. Soooo Lombardi left for Green Bay in 1959 and Landry for Dallas the next year. The rest is the stuff of legend, including the fact that the team the Packers had to beat to get to each of the first two Super Bowls was the Cowboys.
