What is it about the Chargers, inspiring teams to go for 2 instead of a tie and overtime? |
|
Kansas City just failed, after Denver succeeded in week two.
You almost never see that, let alone twice to one team in two months.

2. I thought it was a dumb move by Edwards |
|
San Diego is shell shocked this season, finding ways to lose. They hardly would have been a confident cinch in overtime.
Plus, those roll right plays on 2 point conversions have been snuffed out routinely in recent years. If you're going to gamble with a limited offense, at least make it something besides the most predictable play imaginable. The outside linebacker penetrated and disrupted the design of the play immediately.

3. The first one was a botched hold. |
|
Can't fault him for the one at the end, either. What does the team have to lose? They're not going to the playoffs. Play for the win, give your team a chance to win the game outright.

4. Indeed. Last week it went into OT and they didn't even see the ball. |
|
In the last few years teams are successful with 2-point conversions a little over 50% of the time.
KC likely had a better probability of winning by putting all their chips in the pot in this one play versus trying to maintain a sustained drive to score. Yeah, they may have ended the game with a sustained drive, but that was preceded by 5 drives which resulted in punts (and 3 of these were 3 and outs).

5. Since they're not going to make the playoffs... |
|
If you get the win, great, if not, you help your draft position, which KC very much needs.

6. Didn't think of that - kind of a win-win that way. |
|
You make the 2, you energize and inspire your team. You don't, and it's a better draft pick.
Maybe Herm isn't so dumb after all!

8. And unlike when Houston's kicker shanked a gimme |
|
(badly) a few years back and ended up with the top pick, you don't look like you're trying to throw a game. You look like you're trying to win.

7. Fuck it. What did they have to lose at this point? |
|
It's hit or miss that a team will even get the ball in overtime. They aren't in any race, so one more loss won't hurt them. If it works the team gets a big lift and feels good for a week.
I liked it.

9. It's more or less a break-even decision anyway, isn't it? |
|
What's the conversion rate for 2-pointers?

10. There were three possibilities for a Chiefs win |
|
1. Make the 2-point conversion 2. A long scoring drive in OT 3. A Chargers turnover in OT allowing a short Chiefs scoring drive
For a good team, 2 and 3 may be more likely. For the current Chiefs, No. 1 was the most likely to win.
