On Marriage Rights for all persons, from your Resident Straight White Middle Aged person.
I have been listening to arguments here and over in the snake pits regarding our candidates. Of course, when it comes down to Clinton/Obama/Edwards or "Republican de jour" then the Democrat wins as far as I'm concerned, but I don't like it, and will not support any re-election efforts without MAJOR attitude change.

Each Major Democratic candidate has, in some way, supported "Civil Unions" in a second-class citizen way, and not Marriage Rights for all couples. They "disagree" with the "concept" for one of these reasons:

1. Religious Convictions
2. Personal Reasons or Preferences

HOW DARE THEY?

Who the HELL gave any one of "our" candidates the "right" to oppose EQUAL RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW for ALL people?
Who the HELL gave any one of "our" candidates the "right" to oppose a common right for all people under the label of "...I don't personally agree with it..." or "...I disagree under religious grounds..."?

HOW DARE THEY? In the year 2008, is it permitted to say "...I don't agree with the mixing of the races on personal grounds..." or "...I don't agree with the right of a Jew and a Christian to get married under religious grounds..." AND STILL BE CONSIDERED A CANDIDATE FOR PUBLIC OFFICE?

Shame on Obama, Clinton, AND Edwards. What is REQUIRED under the law here is not for them to agree or disagree with: it is to be legally defended, up to and beyond the Supreme Court into the Legislature or by Presidential Order.

Shame on ALL the current candidates from either party. I don't believe in GOD, but if there is one, May God Forgive them for I certainly will not.

5. It is disgusting beyond belief.
I've been involved with fighting for the civil rights of ALL people for almost 40 years, and to still be fighting this after the Civil Rights acts of the 60's, after Brown v Board of Education, after the Stonewall riots, after Harvey Milk and Robert Mapplethorp is sickening.

Will the sins of this guilty nation have to be cleansed once with the blood of citizens? If you read the papers, with each violence committed against the community, this is already happening.

FUCK the bigots: let them stew in the slime of their disgusting prejudices; GIVE ALL OF THE PEOPLE THEIR EQUAL RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW, AS GUARANTEED BY THE CONSTITUTION.

2. Cheers to you Tyler
Here's another straight white guy who agrees 100%. If gays can't marry or join the military they should not have to pay taxes. And if gays can't marry religious zealots should not be able to divorce. Its all very simple. This is the land of the free, not the land of focus on the family.

7. WHY do we have to keep saying it???
Where were these "Candidates" when Equal Rights under the Law was being taught in High School in U.S. Government 100???

I actually remember the lecture where I heard it, and the teacher who taught it. I kept thinking, all we have to do is teach this over and over, and eventually, when I am older, all people will be equal under the law.

Right.

3. This straight white male agrees completely.
One of my big reasons for supporting Kucinich, and I made that point time and again. I got nothing but crickets in response from the HillObamaEdwards supporters.

6. Or you get this:
If you talk about OBAMA, you get "...well HILARY..." and vice versa.

I don't give two shits what they FEEL or BELIEVE about this. I want commitment to EQUAL RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW.

If ONE PERSON does not have Equal Rights Under the Law, no one does, let alone an entire group.

9. I'm ashamed of the Nation that we still go through this...
Matthew Shepard is being tortured and killed over and over in the schools, the workplaces, the CHURCHES, and the halls of government EVERY DAY.

The reason this can continue is likely the same reason ANYONE can tolerate torture being done in our name.

Our legacy will be like filthy rags.

10. I don't get
Why more people don't see this.

It is a simple issue. Do you support full and equal rights for all citizens? Yes or no. I don't care if the majority of people (and it's barely a majority) are against it. Have some political courage and do the right thing. The majority of people in the country did not support desegregation - but it was the right thing to do even though it cost the Democrats the south for a generation or two.

Back when one of my Senators, Whitehouse, was challenging Chaffee for his seat, they had one televised debate. The questioner asked Chaffee, do you support same sex marriage - Chaffee, a republican didn't miss a beat and said - yes, of course. I support equal treatment under the law of all citizens. Whitehouse hesitated when asked and he said yes also because how could the dem say no when the R gave an unhesitating YES.

I want a bumper sticker that says either - "I am not a wedge issue" or "My family is not a wedge issue"

At least when people are being racist fucks they try to hide it behind a banner of "states rights" or some other such nonsense. When they attack us LGBTQ folk, they're right up front with their hatred.

I especially don't understand how the black community (the evangelical part) can use the same book that justified their slavery to deny basic human status to LGBTQ people.

And now I've gone all tl;dr on people.

11. I'm sorry.
I wish I could speak for the Party, for Straight people in general...
You're right of course, and it disgusts me to my soul when I hear some narrow minded and narrow opinioned fool speak out on their warped morality or personal bullshit regarding the fact that Equal Rights under the LAW is still an issue in this country.

13. Simple fact of life around here
Once our campaign contribution has been receipted in and our vote counted we are supposed to get lost until our support is needed again. You'd think we'd have gotten a clue by now.

Living proof delusion is alive, well, and flourishing even it what bills itself as the intelligensia. Sort of like the Yiddish Translation of "Mein Kampf" if you ask me.

16. That crowd is beyond understanding
All their supposed fiscal conservatism can't justify their support of those who are very literally the enemy. There's something sick about them.

And just so there's no question, I'm voting for whatever Democratic ticket we end up with this year. Always do. At least the Dems lube up pretty well before screwing us. And we know by now not to expect a phone call the next day.

17. I just hate the "(Insert Candidate name here)" is the Second Coming rhetoric.
We know if we vote we WILL vote for a Democrat. The Republican Party is about 2 steps from organizing POGROMS.

But hearing people I want to think of as rational RAVE about Y OR X candidate, and how they are JESUS REBORN.

It's just too sickening.

18. The comment about Edwards is right on.
How can he have his position on same sex marriage when the two most influential women in his life support it? Well at least have no problem with it, they can't really support it and still stump for him.

21. That's an easy one
Women are always ahead of men on this issue, at least statistically. Maybe because they get the fact that all LGBT folks have mothers?

20. Of the three left, Edwards is the only one not actively courting homophobes
Only Kucinich was right on this issue, as he was right on everything else. I think Edwards is clearly second best here, as on everything else.

22. Yes, the arrogance
Who gives a flying fu__ about their religion or personal preference---it's about the Law of the Land, the Bill of Rights, the spirit of which is equality for all. It's really absurd that our progress is held up by personal "feelings" about the institution of marriage.

24. Thanks Tyler
and Boss and the rest. This gay white male appreciates the support. And i am tired of being told by BOH supporters that his support of Donnie McC " means nothing - you should check out BOH's web page - IT HAS A GLBT SECTION!!!" like I am supposed to buy that shit.

AFAIAC none of the dems deserve my vote. I will vote in november as i want to re-elect my Rep, but pulling the lever for any of the current candidates for president will be very difficult.

Call it the Audacity of Hope, but I hope and pray that someday an AA man or a white woman can understand that us fags are not gonna be treated like second class citizens.

And you're damn right BOSS - if I cannot get married, can I get my $38,000 back in 2007 Federal income taxes? (guess what I did this weekend!)

peace to my straight brothers in arms!

Big:pals:
