Lutheran Scholars Oppose Gay Proposal
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/03/030305lutherans.htm

Seventeen scholars from 12 campuses have released a strong statement against a proposal that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America officially maintain its stance against same-sex ceremonies and gay clergy while tolerating dissent from that policy.

The protesters say that the measure, put forward by a task force in January, threatens the church's unity and its "historical, biblical and confessional teachings and practice."

A churchwide assembly of the 5-million-member ELCA will take up the proposal in August

1. This Is Hopeful... But The Church MEMBERS Need To Speak Out Too.
Now's their chance to do something DIFFERENT and take a stand against faith-based bigotry and hate. They must seize this opportunity to do something positive.

>> must be some of those anti-gay Christians that people on here like to talk about <<

Huh? I think the anti-gay Christians that people on here "like to talk about" are the ones who do nothing. THOSE are the ones who are strangely QUIET on the issues. True?

We have BOTH the ones who actively oppose equality for homosexuals... and others who approve of the bigotry in silence. The ones who show consent by doing nothing or by publicly talking about acceptance and equality, but opposing it in the privacy of the voting booth.

I know who my enemy is.

5. Indeed that's true... not everyone is quiet...

It kind of sounds like you were correcting some possible misunderstanding I might have. Just to clarify... you had originally commented: "must be some of those anti-gay Christians that people on here like to talk about."

And I didn't agree with that statement at all. I elaborated by mentioning TWO types of anti-gay Christians that many here "like to talk about" (or feel compelled to scorn). Specifically, that would be the ones who actively OPPOSE equality for mo's, and the the passive ones who secretly wish things were different but who say nothing.

Returning to your last statement in defense of the "third group". My comments were in reference to the folks who are actively anti-gay or passively anti-gay. If the folks you're talking about are actively fighting for acceptance and is not being quiet about it, then they aren't "anti-gay"

I'm glad that the ones you're talking about are there. I only wish they were more organized and would use some of the get-the-message-out tactics of the conservative anti-gay Christians... but other than that... I don't think I've spoken unfairly about them.

2. relieved and disappointed
As members of the ELCA we were relieved that the bigots and racists in our church family didn't win but at the same time were disappointed that Jesus's teaching of loving, forgiving and peace were ignored.

6. The Religious Coalition For Freedom To Marry
Religious Coalition For Freedom To Marry
http://www.rcfm.org /

Who We Are

The Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry supports civil marriage rights for same gender couples and seeks to promote dialogue within faith communities about religious marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

How You Can Help!

We seek your support for our efforts by urging your clergy leader and/or congregation to sign the "Massachusetts Declaration of Religious Support for the Freedom of Same Gender Couples to Marry." We hope to gather many hundreds of signatures from religious leaders who are willing to speak out for justice and freedom, so that the voice of the progressive religious community of Massachusetts will be heard on this issue. Already over 500 religious leaders have signed the petition.

We also invite you to join us as a member or contributor of RCFM. Our plans to develop lobbying efforts, educational resources, and a coordinated interfaith outreach to the media, all require the support and participation of as many of us as possible. Please contact us to discuss ways in which you can become involved in our efforts!

Why We Are Doing This

The inability of same-gender couples to legally affirm their commitment to each other in marriage, is one of the most pressing civil rights issues in America today. Beyond the societal recognition and support being denied to thousands of stable, loving relationships, responsible couples who are sharing their lives together have no access to the legal protections and benefits extended to other married citizens.

The overwhelming source of opposition to these basic civil liberties is the powerful voice of the Religious Right. In response, we are a group of clergy and lay leaders representing a broad spectrum of denominations and faith traditions, who believe that we have a sacred mandate to struggle for the freedom to marry for all Americans. We believe that the religious voice advocating this fundamental civil right must be heard in the face of the often virulent bigotry espoused in the name of faith.
