Voters backing same-sex marriage ban [with a 2 million vote caveat]
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/11/04/MNCC13QR90.DTL&type=politics

After a heated, divisive campaign, fueled by a record $73 million of spending, California voters Tuesday were backing Proposition 8, which would change the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

(snip)

"There are a lot of votes still to count, and we expect the race to go on late tonight and possibly beyond," said Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, the guiding force behind the "No on Prop. 8" campaign.

Election officials estimated there could be as many as 2 million ballots left to count after election day, mainly from mail ballots that arrived Tuesday.

I can only have faith against the tyranny of the majority.

1. Glad you have faith in it, I see nothing that makes me think that it won't be passed
but hey, look on the good side fellow 2nd class citizens - at least the good people of CA care enough to make sure that chickens have bigger cages.

2. you think I like my rights getting taken away by the majority?
but 2 million is a lot of votes to count, so I have to hold on to something.

6. no, i don't think that at all - I'm still in shock at how many millions
were willing to vote for Hope & Change, and even chicken rights - that still think you and I deserve to be 2nd class citizens.

Those millions of votes left to be counted shouldn't even be needed.

And my apologies about the tone of my typing - part of me is loving BO's election, Liddy Dole's boot out the door and a host of other things. But then there's this pill to swallow, once again.

3. Hey MAHNY, I'm holding out hope as well.
Hoping for a miracle. And looking forward to NY and NJ joining the equality zone in the Northeast.

Let's hold on, man.

5. FWIW, my husband, my daughter, my son-in-law and I
all voted NO on 8.

I am so sorry that it looks as though 8 will pass.

I keep thinking how Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his Letter from a Birmingham Jail in reponse to religious leaders who had signed a statement asking that African Americans wait patiently for change. These religious leaders said that King's non violent protests sparked violence.

King's letter argued that non violent protests were necessary to bring about a change that recognized that everyone is equal.

It seems to me that organized religion is often on the wrong side of human rights.

But then I remember that King himself was a pastor.

I think we can't give up in our quest to gain equal rights for everyone just as King never gave up.
