1. I wonder if they could use this as a neutron source...
for creating a subcritical combined fusion/fission reactor. have nuclear fission fuel rods placed sparcely enough that they cannot support a chain reaction, and then use these devices to provide enough neutron flux to keep the fission reaction going. If you ever want to turn off the reactor, you can just switch off the fusion devices, and the fission reaction would peter out...
