We're going through a terrible ice storm that shows no signs of abating before the night is over. We just heard on the news that the area she lives is without power. I don't know if it's the entire Muskogee area or not, and if her house is included in the power outage, but hold a good thought if you will.

We went through this a year ago December and it was terrible. :scared:

3. Here in Northern Virginia,

we're having an ice storm after a day of sweet snowfall - an accumulation of 1.5 inches. It's vile out there.

But, we're in no danger, as far as I can tell, of losing power.

My best thoughts are out to all who are in the dark. That really bites it.

I've been checking in, watching for you. The sleet's still bouncing off windows here, so I can imagine what the streets/roads are like up there. It's supposed to do this tonight and then gradually turn to rain tomorrow morning.

The glare ice is nothing compared to the idiot drivers, I know.

10. We are thinking power thoughts!

Having lived in a cold place where we did not have central heat, we lost power every day and you could see daylight through every door and window frame, I know how miserable it can be.

The news this morning said some lights are back on down her way. Hopefully they'll get everyone back up soon.

We're hunkered down as the roads out here are pretty bad. When it gets light we have to go out and see if we can figure out what banged against the side of the house really loudly about three times in the wee hours of this morning. No trees near the house so not really sure.

For those of you not familiar, I live in a valley next to the Arkansas river near Muskogee, Oklahoma. There are 4 families that live on my dead end road. It is 12 miles to town and that road is a series of winding hills with some mighty treacherous curves. My Jeep Wrangler does great but I will not risk life and limb to go to town. Luckily, I am self employed and I can work from home via GoToMyPC.

We thought we were going to escape this time as the forecast early on said mostly rain for us. As Monday noon approached, it was apparent that it would be much worse than expected. The temperature dropped steadily all afternoon.:scared: The rain started in earnest around 6:00 pm and became ice around midnight. We had a continuous heavy ice/rain mixture all night and into early Tuesday morning. That turned onto sleet around 3:00 pm and continued until 5:00 am Wednesday morning. They say we got 1 to 3 inches but I have 3 inches in my driveway and in some parts of the pasture 4 inches deep.

The power went out around 2:00 pm yesterday afternoon. After going through 2 of these ice storms since 2000, we invested in a LARGE generator that runs on propane. We are able to run the upstairs heating unit, the blower on the Buck stove fireplace insert downstairs, space heater in laundry room (to keep pipes from freezing), hot water heater, refrigerator and freezers, lights, and even the TV and computer.:blush:

Our biggest concern is the tree damage. We store our wood in a large dog kennel with a sheet metal roof supported with angle iron. Three trees fell on this and crushed the side with the gate. We are going to have to cut away the chainlink on the other side to get wood for the fireplace. There are at least 15 to 20 trees snapped off at the base and another 10 with the tops broken off. This is not to mention the storm of 2007 that took out at least 50 of my trees. As I type this, I can hear what sounds like gunfire all around as the limbs and trees splinter and break.

I feel quite guilty with all this extra power. I have called my neighbors and invited them all over to dinner tonight. I only have use of a 2 burner propane stove. Running electric appliances puts a strain on the generator and heat for the house is more important than toaster ovens.

I will probably have lasagna with salad and bread. We made a large pan of this 2 weeks ago, portioned it out and stored it in Food Saver bags in the freezer. I will have enough for us and our 7 guests. I had just made several baguettes on Sunday and have plenty of salad fixings.

Glad you and your neighbors are all okay. Is the outage such that your four properties are all alone?

We are in a 110 house area that is always the first out and last restored cuz we're at the end of the line.

23. We are always the last to get power

The news just reported there are 1000 without power in my county. My sister lives about 5 miles from me and they got power back about an hour ago. The electric coop says it will be tomorrow before everyone else has power.

There has been no thaw today. High temperature has been 25 and the cloud cover has hung over us. We are going to have to get extra bodies and chainsaws to cut a way out to the main road as cedars are bowed down over the drive out of the property.

Hey, truthfully, I wouldn't mind 3 or 4 more days at home. This is not "roughing it". The last three times without power and a 2500 watt generator is roughing it.

I would post pictures but my card reader went on the blink last week and I haven't had time to pick up a new one. Maybe I'll go tinker with it.

I'm glad you're all right and made of what looks to be sturdy pioneer stock. Did pioneers fix lasagna?

Here in Northern Virginia, we're ice-covered, although traffic has melted the stuff on the main roads. Temps are starting to drop as the sun goes down and the icy drizzle continues, which means rush hour will be frightful. So far, no power outages around here, which is reassuring.

Oh, the trees.

I do a zen meditation every time the wind blows (

"thespacebetweenthetreesthespacebetweenthetreesthespacebetweenthetrees" goes the chant) ever since a tree took out my power and phone lines this time last year. It is a very loud memory.

I've had trees take out gazebos and land on fence everywhere. I love living in the trees but when they fall :wow:

20. We went through this about 3 weeks ago

No power for a week.

Hoping all is well. The storm is coming atop us as we speak. Apparently it's 1400 miles long, which is pretty much half the United States. Supposedly we'll get up to 20 inches and maybe outages. At least I have it down to a science given the last storm in December. PITA, though.

How happy to hear that you're okay. I wouldn't expect that you would be less than well prepared. Sorry about the trees. My friend in Bristow had such beautiful redbuds on her spread and they were almost all ruined in that ice storm of 2007. Take it easy!
