I just got back from a long weekend in Tallinn, Estonia..... |
|
Now THAT is hearty food!
Pelmeni - fried Siberian ravioli. Delicious, but more like Chinese dumplings that ravioli.
Garlic bread - dark, heavy brown bread that was deep fried with more chopped garlic than you can possibly imagine.
Salmon roe with pancakes, sour cream and raw onion - very fishy!
Pork with sauerkraut - the BEST sauerkraut in the world is serverd in Grandma's Place, as visited by Hillary Clinton some years ago.
Grilled pike-perch with creamy mushroom sauce - delicate fish, fabulous rich sauce.
We also went out to the best restaurant in the whole country to celebrate my g/f's birthday. It cost over £100 with wine (which is a LOT when you consider how much you get for a pound in Estonia) but was worth it....
Scallops with truffle-oil potatoes, guinea fowl baked with vanilla, duck liver parfait to start....MMMMmmmmmm!
Don't forget the fantastic beers and the Vana Tallinn liqueur - which is 50% alcohol!
An absolutely amazing weekend with great food and the most beautiful walled city you will ever see.

2. I visited Tallinn once |
|
Really beautiful, interesting city. It was only a day visit, I think I just grabbed a sandwich for lunch. The McDonald's had posters for something called the McFarmer, I thought that was rather droll.
There are Ukrainian pelmeni, too. They are like tortellini, but with very savory fillings, no need for sauce.

4. Yes....and no............ |
|
Yes, I've got pics - some will go in the DU photography group soon, and I'll post a link here.
Nope, no street vendors for food at the moment, unless you could markets, but even they didn't have very much.
Having said that, it was -8 degrees celcius during the day, so you could forgive people for not standing around selling food!

Bring back memories. We took a walking tour of the Old City, led by a nice young lady. Well, fairly nice, she really hated the Russians, and as far as she was concerned, they could go ahead and bulldoze that cathedral, and everything else even slightly connected to Russians. She also thought that anyone who still drove a Russian car was a real loser.
