KITTERY, Maine — The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is expanding to California, where it will set up a maintenance shop.
The Navy plans to establish the detachment in San Diego to take over submarine maintenance activities previously performed by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington state.
The Maine and New Hampshire congressional delegations said in a statement Thursday that the Navy is transferring workloads to the Kittery yard “in order to leverage its expertise in submarine maintenance and to improve the stability of submarine maintenance to the fleet.”
Navy officials say about 70 civilian positions will be created after Portsmouth assumes maintenance responsibilities in San Diego on Feb. 1.
