Malmstrom Red Horse Squadron gains 162 spots

The 819th Red Horse Squadron will gain 162 active-duty positions, a 58 percent boost, over the next 30 months, according to a Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., spokesman.

The mobile construction squadron at Malmstrom currently has about 280 personnel, most of whom have been deployed to sites in Afghanistan and Iraq, where they typically build runways, roads and buildings and repair damaged facilities. They’re scheduled to return in the spring, said 1st Lt. Justin Brockhoff, a Malmstrom spokesman.

Red Horse’s commanding officers are among those deployed and weren’t available to comment about the upcoming boost in personnel.

“This is good news for Great Falls, and will lessen the blow of Malmstrom’s losing the 564th Missile Squadron,” said attorney Warren Wenz, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Committee of 80 group, which lobbies for local military missions. “We look forward to their arrival and want to know more about the nature of their work.”

Missile maintenance crews are about halfway done with removing 50 of Malmstrom’s 200 Minuteman III silo-based nuclear missiles. The removed missiles were all assigned to the 564th Missile Squadron, which lies between Shelby and Dutton. Air Force officials say Malmstrom will lose 500 of its 3,600 military positions shortly after the squadron is deactivated this summer.
