SEATTLE — A former Army Ranger accused of masterminding the takeover-style robbery of a Tacoma bank has returned to the U.S. to face charges that include conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of a hand grenade.
Prosecutors say 21-year-old Luke Sommer fled to British Columbia after storming the Bank of America branch with three other men, including one other Fort Lewis soldier, in August 2006. He was placed under house arrest there and fled before being recaptured.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Seattle says he was turned over to U.S. custody at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine on Friday and was scheduled to be arraigned at U.S. District Court in Seattle in the afternoon. He’s expected to enter a guilty plea next week.
The men wore ski masks and brandished handguns and automatic AK-47s, and they took $54,000 during the 90-second robbery. In all, seven people were charged in the investigation —
five of them soldiers — and all but Sommer have pleaded guilty.
