A Naval Academy freshman died Monday night after having been hospitalized last week for a suspected case of bacterial meningitis.
The academy identified the student as Midshipman 4th Class Frederick Henry Eissler, 20, of West Chester, Pa. Eissler died of complications from an infection of Nieserra meningitis, a bacteria frequently associated with bacterial meningitis, according to an academy statement.
Some 63 other midshipmen, Naval Academy staff members and emergency responders who had close contact with Eissler have been given precautionary antibiotics, according to the statement. There’s no sign yet any of them have been sickened, he said, nor that anyone else at the Annapolis campus has meningitis.
Paramedics took Eissler to Baltimore Washington Medical Center on Wednesday night after he said he felt very ill. He was transferred Friday to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he died.
Meningitis, which is typically transferred by people in close contact — such as those who live in dormitories — kills between five and 15 college students per year, according to the American College Health Association.
