Editorial: Flight pay on hold

More than three months into fiscal 2008, the Air Force has yet to finalize its primary retention incentive program for pilots.

Aviator continuation pay rates should have been set by now. ACP pays up to $25,000, depending on a pilot’s years in service and the aircraft that he or she flies. Rates for new commitments are adjusted annually based on Air Force needs and retention rates.

Without setting a policy for aviator continuation pay, the service can’t provide its pilots the information they need to make informed choices about whether to stay in the service.

The other services have had their programs in place for months.

The Air Force invests $1 million to train each pilot, and needs to keep as many of them as possible, both to fly and to assume crucial staff jobs throughout the service.
