I learnt a new word today: 'Atheofascist'
Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 11:30 AM by muriel_volestrangler
and, while you might have thought it refers to people like Enver Hoxha, who banned religion in Albania, in fact it means several inhabitants of DU. Apparently. The fascist crime in question? Calling Christians 'idiots'.

So, according to their enemies (because no-one uses these terms about themselves):

  • Islamofascists are trying to create a world caliphate, enforcing sharia, by violence
  • Christofascists are trying to create a Dominionist USA, with biblical laws like the death penalty for adultery, by subverting the US government
  • Atheofascists are trying to ridicule people with beliefs they don't agree with, by calling them 'idiots' on DU.

Come on, guys, where has our ambition gone? We're getting Left Behind. How can we join in the push to Orwell's 1984 and the division of the world into 3 totalitarian powers if we just sit here talking?

Today the Religion/Theology forum, tomorrow the World!

(puts on fireresistant underware)

You are upset that someone is being called names by Christians because they called them idiots?

You don't see anything ironic here?

On Edit: Changed from first person to third.

4. I think it's the silliness
of going all the way to label a few rude atheists along with the millions of Muslims and Christians who wield real power in the world and with it might just succeed in their goals.

9. More or less what trotsky said
Not so much upset as surprised, but maybe just a little annoyed as well, at the mismatch in what each group has to be before the 'fascist' label appears. Yes, there is a bit of irony, I suppose.

10. Here is something to remember
They really do feel pressured by us. But not us specifically. Atheists tend to embrace the cutting edge of social progress. As we do not have dogmatic beliefs tying us down to prejudices we tend to be able to challenge our preconceptions a bit more readily. Thus we not only embrace the cutting edge, we perhaps push it further as well.

Our society is changing. Its secular nature means it is constantly reexamining itself. Working to remove injustices and wrongs that it has carried with it for centuries. We are tied in the minds of many people to that change.

Thus when pillars of belief and dogmatic authority are assaulted or worse struck down by the advances of society those that cling to such beliefs are threatened by it. Their way of life really is under assault. And we in their eyes are truly the dogs of war leading the assault on their beliefs. And in truth we are.

We look at their prejudices and beliefs and see them as antiquarian hold overs from a dark time. We wish the world were rid of them now. And we happen to be winning in the large scale of things. Reason and science continue to pound on their sanctuaries. They truly do feel as though there is a great conspiracy to do away with them. And though I do not stand on their side I do understand what they see and fear.

In the end they are not the enemy. It is authoritative dogmatic belief systems that are the enemy. But removing them from people is no easy task. Particularly in a society that embraces tolerance (as do we). It pits some of our greatest ideals against each other. Tolerance, freedom of mind, and the embrace of a progressive society.

Belief in god does not come from reason. Reason alone is not what is going to unseat belief. You may not be able to remove their beliefs with reason but you can guide them to a more reasonable position with it and perhaps open their eyes to some of the prejudices they still hold.

12. Maybe they feel pressure from more people than atheist DUers
but the phrase was specifically directed at "all the atheofascists/Christianbashers on this site". It seemed more than the worried cry of someone who felt under general attack - it's about what's been said on DU.

3. Who cares what those idiot Xians believe?
Bill Maher had a good discussion of this: criticizing those who have "faith" as actually having no reason.

Unless a Xian pushes his/her crap in my face, I'll leave well enough alone. But otherwise I can't help but to point out the irrationality of their belief system.

6. Atheofascist....
I *LIKE* it!

I was just now pointing out the ridiculousness of how you can have 70-80% of the Murkan Sheeple claiming to be Christian, thus the remaining 20-30% would be split up amongst Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Atheists, etc.

And thus, MAYBE 5% is persecuting SEVENTY percent?

Does Not Compute...

8. LMAO! From the History Geek POV...
...this is sort of like 1939, when (according to Joe Stalin) a nearly defenseless, peace-loving Russia was facing the hostility and aggression of mighty Finland.

No...wait...that's not right. Scratch that thought.

But a couple questions come to mind. First, why are DUers are adopting RW catch phrases? And in all caps I ask, "W.T.F."???
