1. Your subject line reminds me of the bumpersticer I saw today: |
|
Bright yellow background, with bold black letters, in the back windshield: "Keep your eyes on Jesus". I guess they were hoping to be rear-ended and get a new van.

...of an old joke I heard growing up in the South.
Billy Graham is driving his Cadillac one cold winter day in North Carolina.
Suddenly he rounds a curve and sees a beat-up old car in front of him, weaving all over the road.
Billy says to his wife: "That poor fellow must be ill. Perhaps we'd better catch up and see if he needs assistance."
To himself he's thinking: "I better get around this drunk as quick as I can..."
So Billy steps on the gas and passes the clunker. But then his Caddy hits a small patch of ice, goes off the road, tears down a barb-wire fence, and flips over three times.
The drunk stops his car and staggers over to the wreck. "Damn, Rev. Graham!" he says. "Are you all right?"
"Yes, thank you," Billy smiles. "We are fine. You know...Jesus is riding with me."
"Well, you better let him ride with me. You're gonna kill him."

puts me in mind of a short story I just read this morning.
Lover of Statues by Ian Watson
In the April/May Issue of Asimov's Science Fiction.
A woman is showing an alien the great statues of Europe. They come to The Fallen Angel in Madrid's Parque del Buen Retiro and she tries to describe what it represents.
She is thinking of how god, and a man that recently dumped her, require absolute surrender of our being to their superiority/divinity/authority.
She describes:
"In our myth," I replied, "a supreme being known as God creates the world. The officers of God are called angels. The chief angel, noble and beautiful, is named Satan. The angels live in a blessed place, or state of existence called Heaven."
"Satan doesn't regard God as completely almighty. So God throws Satan angrily out of Heaven."

Multifabric clothes, trimmed beards, cheese steak, yeast, indoor plumbing: surely these are the tools of Satan. Murder, rape, genocide and slavery are still good, right?
