BILOXI, Miss. - First came out-of-pocket medical expenses, the bills piling up faster than Jerry Gollott and his wife could pay them. Then, sidelined by heart and back ailments, the retired police officer fell behind on his $1,370 monthly mortgage payment.

It wasn't until Hurricane Katrina, though, that Gollott's tenuous hold on solvency turned into a financial freefall that forced him to liquidate in bankruptcy court.

The burdens of the storm could eventually send many others down the same path, but a change in U.S. bankruptcy laws could make recovery even harder for those who follow, experts say.

"It's like staring into a big black hole, not knowing what's gonna happen to you," Gollott said last week as he drove around the debris that litters his battered Biloxi neighborhood.

5. I agree. This is very important
BTW, did anyone just see the fight between the two Senators from Louisiana on the Senate floor tonight. That was really good. Sen. Vitter was on and droning on about how much LA needs help, but, you know, in a Rethug kind of way. Sen. Landreiu then called him on his support of non-forgiveable loans. (giving the * Admin the right to decide to forgive loans or not that are made to people and small businesses affected by KAtrina.) They ended up in a floor fight with one talking over the other and Viter taking back his time and not letting Landriu speak.

Then Senator Sleaze (Stevens) jumped in and reminded people that Alaska didn't get this much help in 1964 when they suffered a calamity. That was momumentally unhelpful and so everyone left the floor in a big huf and now nobody's talking.

Oh, and the Senate may be in session till 4:30, if Landreiu gets her way. (She doesn't want to recess for the Columbus Day week off until the Senate passes some legislation that actually helps the cities and towns in LA to met payroll and stay in existence.)

6. Does anybody know what happened to Feingold's bill
trying to postpone when the bill will take effect? [if nothing is done, it will be Oct 17, I think). Last time I heard, 22 senators were supporting it.

7. I will try and look it up.
There are powerful Admin figures and Senate Rethugs who do not want to delay the bankruptcy bill from going into efeect. no matter what. I would expect that Frist will try and derail it or refuse to allow it to come to the floor.

Was it referred to committee?
