Portage Valley in the winter
These pictures were taken from the same spot looking left and then looking right.

Portage Glacier is just right of center in the picture below. When I first moved up here in 1975, the glacier came down into the middle of the lake. Global warming at work.

2. I know. Isn't that something?
You've been here a long time, too, haven't you? I hadn't been back there for a while when my husband moved up here in 2003, so I was kind of excited to take him back and show him his first real glacier. I was so shocked to see where it had gone. I don't think he really believes me that it used to be out in the middle of the lake there.

4. That's pretty...
Did you take that from the visitor's center? Mine was from the little bridge right before you hit the tunnel to Whittier.

5. Visitor's center
I used to take my Zodiac up Twenty Mile River all the time in the fall - looking for Silvers...found some good sloughs where they holed up in.

6. That's absolutely gorgeous.
You are so lucky to have had the boat. We don't, so the only time we get out on a river is when we do our annual Kasilof float trip with the guide in July. Maybe we'll have to get one of these because I would LOVE to get off the highway -- and not have to rely on my old legs to propel me. LOL.

7. It all looks pretty when the suns out...
But when the icy fog comes off the mountains and lands in your boat...you still shiver...
