When Barbara Brebner first heard about a worker boycott by immigrants planned for Monday, the Santa Rosa resident began to worry about her abdominal aortic aneurysm operation scheduled for that day.
"Two years ago, I had a hip replacement and I noticed that many of the people helping the hospital get its work done were Hispanic," Brebner said. "They were nurses assistants, people who cleaned floors and brought food to you."
Her doctor assured her she wouldn't need anyone to bring her food for 48 hours and she would be surrounded by a small platoon of nurses and doctors. But Brebner's concern is exactly what boycott organizers are hoping to achieve.
For weeks, immigrants in Sonoma County and across the nation have been making preparations for an economic boycott, which calls on all immigrants to stay home from work and to avoid buying such things as food and gasoline Monday.
