133 posts are on the Greatest Page right now. |
|
Anyone else think the Greatest Page is getting too long lately?
Maybe 10 votes should be required instead of 5.

"Greatest" then maybe it should be raised. I wonder why that is.

6. What if all DU'ers ..... |
|
got like a limited number of 'Recommended Votes' ..... per day to use, or whatever so as not to vote on every inclined whim? IE ... we each get 5 votes per day with which to use to recommend whatever threads we want, but once our alloted votes are used up, the software denies us any more options to recommend anything else the rest of the day? Just a thought, might make us more discerning on what we recommend?

7. That sounds like a good idea to me.... |
|
I thought you had to have a HUNDRED to get on there, but I'm not real good at reading small print in long codes of behavior. And I'm still a grasshopper and don't get to vote, yet.
(Sorry, mods. I do check the rules if I'm not sure, and read those yellow Urgent little rule-postings tacked in threads. I tend to assume that in an intelligent community common sense and trying to use your good manners should be enough, and thus far I think I've mostly been right about that : )

13. The limit would have to be higher than that.... |
|
More like 12-15 votes a day, otherwise, we'd just end up with a bunch of GREAT threads that never make the 5 vote "threshold".
There are more "greatest page" posts because there are so many posts being genereated now.

You have a point, I'll go as far as 8 votes a day alloted to each member, but am still willing to negotiate (like we have the final say so or something, lol) Peace. :)

16. Mac's discussion boards... |
|
do this. They also give users privileges based on the "level" they've attained (numberof posts/# of recommends, etc). It's a crappy system when you have people who can contribute from the get go. Lounge is only accesible by "Level 3" members, etc... kinda elitist...
but, that's just my 2 cents...
but yeah, i agree, the Greatest page does seem really crowded lately... too many important things going on is my guess...

GD moves so fast that I think there's room. That many threads means that many things are going on.

12. What bothers me is is how many posts are dupes. |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-07-06 04:20 AM by intheflow
Or worse, threads that only say, "You have to see this thread!" and link to a thread on the GP. I'm never quite sure who recommends those, or why.
But I suppose it's to be expected on days when the news flies fast and furious. And if we make it 10 votes to get on the GP, a lot of very interesting, important information will go unnoticed if it's posted in one of the smaller forums.
Posts on the GP only last 24 hours. It's not a perfect system, but it's something I can live with.

18. The dupes are what bother me too |

Sometimes it seems like there are 100 threads on "greatest" with 40 about one subject and 30 about another one. Add all the ones about every time Kerry or Clark says "Please pass the butter"... (Don't read that wrong. I like them both, but sometimes their supporters seem to think that every time they open their mouths, it's big news.) Sometimes I see the exact same thread, started by the same person in two different forums, both on greatest and I think "They should be combined.)
We've had refinements to greatest several times and maybe it's time for another. I like the idea of limiting how many greatest votes anyone can do each day, if there really are people voting for a lot of threads--only the mods could know that. I don't think I've ever voted for more than three in a day, and even that many is quite unusual, but with what, 90000 members now, it doesn't take many voting too often to fill the page.
I doubt that immediately doubling the required number of votes to 10 is the right way to go, but gradually moving it up till we reach a good balance may be good. When you look at the greatest page, it looks like a lot of threads get a lot of votes, but they get most of those votes *after* they'e already on greatest, because more people see them then. The times I've had a thread get to greatest, it often takes a good while to get the first five votes, but then more people see it and the vote total explodes.
And yes, the "Hey, look at this" threads really annoy me too. I always want to just respond, "Janet Doobydoo was here."

23. I'm not crazy about limiting the number of rec's per day. |
|
It rubs me wrong, like having all kinds of ballot initiatives in front of you, but you can only pull the lever for the top five you feel most passionately about. :( Not to mention, you might hit your limit before THE post of the day/week/year/century gets posted.
Also, my "forum" of choice is the GP. I don't generally care to hang in GD, LBN, state forums, etc. I'd rather read the choice posts other DUers recommend. So I'm a person who does a lot of recommending (maybe ten or 15 posts a day), but they've already made it onto the GP. I'm just helping them get more exposure.

I also teach, and beginning this year DU was blocked on our computers. A DUer recommended proxify to me and it works like a charm. (You will find that proxify often closes down to everyone but subscribers, but I found the $39 bucks well worth it.)

I discovered proxy servers about 3 weeks ago. Last week the principal asked us not to use them. Our students use them a lot, but I'm afraid I'll get in trouble...
Can administrators tell if and when you use a proxy?

They are good at addressing those issues. I might agree with you. If a post like this can get 13 votes though, what would be the point.
