Are they worthwhile? Do they have clout? Any influence? --- Or are they just navel-gazing whiners and do-nothings?

The solicitation I received in the mail sounds interesting... but I imagine that such sales materials are SUPPOSED to sound interesting.

What do you know about them?

1. Check 'em out here:
http://www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/

They also sponsor a show on Air America Radio on Sundays, "Politically Direct" with David Bender. Good program.

I've been a supporter for more than a decade. They fight the good fight and have been avant-garde on a lot of issues before a lot of us caught up to them.

8. It's truly a great organization...I've been a member of PFTAW
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 05:59 PM by LaPera
since they began...I believe in 1981 when Reagan took office and Jerry Falwell and other fundamentalist were sticking their noses into politics (as they doing now under W) PFTAW is all about keeping the separation of church and state...

It was started by Norman Lear and Woody Allen was on the board when it began (don't know if he still is).

PFTAW is worth donating to, absolutely!!!

MASSIVELY IMPORTANT. 100% GOOD. They keep tabs on the judicial system. They are at the foreground of the fight against theocracy.

and volunteered during 2004 election to help monitor and ensure an honest, fair vote under an umbrella organization called electionprotection.org. On two occasions that day their attorneys were Johnny on the spot for me when voter problems were encountered.

12. No. Here is my situation with them:
I don't know how they got my info, but they called me one day saying I owed them membership money.

I often get mailings, and I always rip 'em up.

I only donated once - to the HRC. And when maltreated by a telemarketer (during my unemployment phase when I had no money and the fscker still wanted me to donate... x( x( ) I stopped donating. Maybe they sold my name to all the other vulture organizations.

Somewhere, somehow, someone said I filled out a form. That was not the truth.

They were kind and corrected their system and complied to my requests...

but I still kept getting letters to become a member, and occasional calls.

Needless to say, after another call I don't get anything anymore.

16. Good point... now for a good response.
I get mailings from them.

To be called one day by them saying I owed them money was a surprise.

And, in 2004 standards, it is far more profitable to use e-mail -- not voice conversation - as a means to rip people off.

Unless, of course, someone stole PFAW's data records... in which case they should stop giving their CEO all that money and put it into their infrastructure. I keep a private life and rarely give my name, never mind my address, phone number, or anything else out to anybody. I've often whined about the downside. The good side is, I don't get much in the way of unsolicited calls... :D

Now I suppose it's possible that a person would go so far to call random people from stolen information, complete with getting accomplices and providing any number of fine details in order to extract money from me. But, really, in this day and age? And even in 2004? And how most phishers call using the name of any old organization, the actual chances of that person being a phisher is low. Possible, but not likely.
