Top Republican blogger posts phone numbers of liberal college students on Web site, students say they're now receiving death threats

And what's worse, Michelle Malkin, the blogger in question, who just happens to be the top Republican blogger, is refusing to take the phone numbers off of her Web site, even though the kids in question have evidence to show they're getting death threats as a result of Malkin's actions.

Posting phone numbers is a time-honored method of political activism. But, there are rules, albeit unwritten.

First off, I would never post the personal phone number of anyone (unless they posted mine first). And if I did so inadvertently, and the person notified me of that fact, I would take the number down - especially after people were getting death threats.

For example, last year during the Jeff Gannon/James Guckert episode, I had access to Gannon's home phone number. I didn't post it because I felt it would have been inappropriate to do so. Some visitors to this blog also posted in the comments what they claimed was Gannon's publicly available social security number - I deleted it as soon as I became aware of it.

With respect to a public figure, that public figure has to prove malice ('publishing' with prior knowledge of the falsity, or 'publishing' with reckless disregard for the truth)('publishing' essentially means communicating the statement to a third person) in order to recover (see 'Goetz'). Also, the defamation would have to not involve humor or satire. We are talking about someone who has deliberately injected herself into the public arena. And, that would border on satire/humor; no one reasonably believe that she is a law-breaking terrorist. So, I think that she would have a hard time with a defamation suit.

I hope that answers some questions.

One other thing that I've found is that it is useful to be able to state that I am, in fact, a Republican when in politically charged settings. It can really throw prejudice to the wind in many situations where the 'adversaries' had already made up their minds that they would not listen to each other based soley on affiliation.

When I'm talking to a Bush-bot I have great success getting through to them after I say I'm a Republican.
At the moment they hear that (usually I mention it before they know my positions) they believe that I am in agreement with their own political philosophy and treat me as comrade and confidant. The result is immediate and profound in most cases. THIS is how important labels and classification are to so many... especially Bush-bots. Once presented with a label they can accept, they make you a part of their 'reality' immediately. And suddenly I have a door in so that I can shed a little light... never disagreeing with them, always telling them they're right "but did you know?"... it can go a long way, and by now I've changed many minds.
It's just a point of psychology you know, and since I'm not lying I could not possible feel like I'm deceiving anyone.

And for the record, the reason I'm here is sanity.

When Bush 'took' office I was amazed.
When he reversed nearly every campaign promise, I got pissed. (And no- I didn't vote for him, I knew he was dysfunction from the start.)
When he cut funding to groups that provide assistance to people in Third-World countries, I was livid.
The marriage of Republicans and the Christian Taliban (and I understood the Taliban well since 1999) was insanity, but the level of power they now had was frightening.

All of these things were happening... right in front of our noses, and no one I knew seemed to care. They were either apolitical, or they were already committed to the status quo. As his term wore on, I knew something was horribly wrong.

It was here, on DU, that I found sanity for the first time since Bush was 'elected'.

Since I am an empiricist, any place where people base their decisions and opinions on facts and reason is a place I belong.

is tempting.

The possibility that we could put America in positions to more effectively combat despotism, famine, and plague is very attractive. I understand the vision these men had, but since they have no real grasp for diplomacy and logistics, they will fail utterly to achieve what they envision... all while still convincing themselves they are succeeding.

Once again, this hinges on law enforcement efforts to arrest the people who actually made threats, first and foremost.

From what I understand, it is not a crime to post publically-available contact information on a blog, even one that foments political controversy. Some websites prudently avoid legal entanglements (including ones they can win) by discouraging such content, but it is hardly a necessity.

Worst of all, Riehl World View admits that he "knew" Iran-Contra crook John Poindexter.
