That is the punch in the face statement that I have been waiting for. She calls this sad little monkey out, and then slices him up like lunch meat.
"It's hard work, on minimum wage, with a baby on the way"
"You know nuthin' bout' hard work"
THAT chick has it going on.
Kicked/nominated/and everything else!

|
They played her song over and over and over. Many there were hearing it for the first time. And it brought many tears.
You have to admit both Neil Young and The Dixie Chicks are household names. I had never heard of Pink before this song came out. But it should gain her some fame.

34. Okay, just checking ... |
|
My daughter's at the opposite end. She had no idea who Neil Young is.
FWIW, Pink is sorta the anti-Britney. She became well-known around the same time as Britney Spears and was constantly compared and contrasted to her, a fact which made it into one of Pink's earlier top-40 songs.
From "Don't Let Me Get Me"
"LA told me, "You'll be a pop star, All you have to change is everything you are." Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears She's so pretty, that just ain't me..."

Dear Mr. President Come take a walk with me Let's pretend we're just two people and You're not better than me I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep What do you feel when you look in the mirror Are you proud
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye How do you walk with your head held high Can you even look me in the eye And tell me why
Dear Mr. President Were you a lonely boy Are you a lonely boy Are you a lonely boy How can you say No child is left behind We're not dumb and we're not blind They're all sitting in your cells While you pave the road to hell
What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay I can only imagine what the first lady has to say You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye How do you walk with your head held high Can you even look me in the eye
Let me tell you bout hard work Minimum wage with a baby on the way Let me tell you bout hard work Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away Let me tell you bout hard work Building a bed out of a cardboard box Let me tell you bout hard work Hard work Hard work You don't know nothing bout hard work Hard work Hard work Oh
How do you sleep at night How do you walk with your head held high Dear Mr. President You'd never take a walk with me Would you http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pink/dearmrpresident.html

The whole idea of "Mr. President, come take a walk with me..." and to ask a few "questions" sounds like an allusion to Cindy Sheehans purpose for camping outside the Crawford Ranch last summer...

It looks like MTV, but I'm reminded of their pro-Bush garbage when Nine Inch Nails was going to perform an anti-war song...
"In its statement, MTV says it is disappointed Nine Inch Nails will not perform. 'While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards,' the network said.... "

When MTV complained about him having an image of Bush in the background as he sang he said something along the lines of, "I'm glad to see that MTV is as disgusted of the sight of Bush as much as I am." I had to laugh at the great way he threw it back at them.

58. I don't put much stock in the "activist value" of Neil Young... |
|
... and other old fogies. Not because they aren't - or better WEREN'T - great, but simply because they're old. Does anyone seriously believe that old farts like the Stones and Young, etc. are going to play a substantial role in getting today's jackass 16 year olds involved in anything important? I don't.
But this kinda stuff by Pink - THAT has substantial activism value, imnsho. Stuff like THAT can serve to open the floodgates of youth on gw's arrested developement cowardly ass.
And getting the youth to actually CARE about this country spells disaster for the republican party.

Don't write off "old fogies". Every protest march I go to, they comprise about a third of the crowd. Morality and justice and conscience are not the sole property of the young.
Some old fogies went toe to toe with Hitler in the last war against facscism. Other old fogies faced down segregation and the Viet Nam war. Please, show some respect for those who have proceeded you.

66. They preceded me as well as proceeding me... lol |
|
.. but that's neither here nor there.
I said nothing disrespectful about those who preceded me.
Ah - except possibly for "old fogies" - though I meant that only in a bantering way - I can see how susceptible to misinterpretation that is tho - my bad.
Another way to make EXACTLY the same point you chose to ignore in my post is to point out the falsehoods in yours:
(1) Old fogies DID NOT go to war with Hitler. It's false to say that they did. Young people went to war with Hitler.
(2) Old fogies DID NOT face face down segregation and Vietnam. It's false to say that they did. Young people faced down segregation and the war (my parents among them).
I suspect you're deliberately missing my point, in the hopes of fomenting some kind of "ageist outrage". Have fun!
I think older folks being 1/3 of the crowd is a problem - in particular, it means to me that there aren't enough young folks involved. Because it's from the young folks that major social movements and changes come from.
And you didn't address what was clearly the point of my post: that older folks have very little ability to "rouse the activist juices" in young folks. That's why people like Pink are/can be so valuable.
It no fault of Young's that he doesn't have that ability (any more) - it's just a generational thing.

I have to admit that I thought of Pink as another lame top-40 punk poser but after watching that video I'm really sorry I judged her. I think I'll go out and buy that album. I'm not afraid to admit I got a bit teary-eyed. Especially with the shots of the people in the audience singing along, cheering.
