MARION - The manager of a Pole Lane Road beryllium/copper foundry declined to comment on fines of $169,200 proposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
"We can't talk about it," said Brett Tennar, vice president-foundry/environmental director, at Semco Corp., 1025 Pole Lane Road. Semco manufactures beryllium copper plunger tips, which are used in machines designed to make injection-molded aluminum parts.
OSHA cited Semco for 27 alleged violations observed during an inspection conducted to make sure the company had corrected safety hazards discovered during a 2005 inspection as agreed, said Kim Nelson, Toledo area assistant director for OSHA. The agency of the U.S. Department of Labor announced the citations Friday.
"This is a large fine," Nelson said. "We don't put out cases with over $100,000 fines on a day-to-day basis."
Tennar declined to comment on whether Semco, which has 72 employees according to the Marion CAN DO! Web site, would request an informal hearing on the citations.
Fining violators, is not OSHA's primary objective, Nelson said.
