Activists from the United Steelworkers and other AFL-CIO unions are planning to be in front of Senator John McCain’s Tucson office today, demanding an end to imports of “lead-laced toys and other unsafe products,” according to a union press release.

The demonstration is planned for noon today at 407 W. Congress St. McCain will be campaigning in South Carolina.

It’s not just McCain’s office. About 100 demonstrations are planned nationwide.

The union (ticked off about the loss of manufacturing jobs to China) wants Congress to pass the U.S. Food and Product Responsibility Act, which would place a greater burden on companies importing products into the U.S. to ensure they are safe, according to the union.

Toys, toothpaste and pet food are just a few of the product categories that have seen lots of recalls in the past year.
