Remember the good old days when racists were shameful and shunned and had to wear sheets?
Now their a sought after voting block.

30. The Clintons using the Republican southern strategy |
|
have made racism once again openly welcomed in the Democratic Party. Back in the 1800s the Dems were the party of the Klan. Seems the Clintons welcome that type of support.

12. Elitism is a meaningless code word |
|
Edited on Thu May-22-08 08:04 PM by nachoproblem
used by right-wing thugs whenever they want to push conformity on anybody trying to express an independent opinion. It's a crap term to use against Obama and an equally crap term to use against Hillary Clinton, or any other politician. By definition a politician is somebody who sets him/herself apart from the masses by getting up in front of people and trying to lead them. Not only is it obvious hypocrisy when it comes from any politician, if you look at who uses it and who they use it on (which is always rich educated people against other rich educated people), it's an obvious attempt to lower the tone of discussion by feeding on jaded people's contempt for politics in general. Logically, if anybody were that offended by elitism they should just stay home on election day, because that's what the majority, aka the "masses," do.

13. There was a time when.... |
|
the repubs would try to get someone labeled as a liberal to make them nearly unelectable in much of America. Suddenly, it doesn't carry the stigma it used to with the average voter (I've always been proud of the title myself), so the new idea is to get the opponent labeled as an elitist, out of touch with the average man and woman. Since most voters are at best under informed, it will probably be effective to some degree for a while. I doubt it is going to be enough to get McInsane elected, though I imagine in parts of the country it will be fairly effective. It is up to Obama to prove that he is not an elitist (and given his humble beginnings, this should be an easy task). This seems to be the one area where so far his campaign is failing, and ignoring WV and KY didn't help him any. I expect this will be corrected for the GE.

28. I expect he probably blew off WV and KY |
|
because he figured he didn't have a chance against the attitudes of people there. I didn't want to assume that was true about the Appalachian states, but if the video is at all accurate I could use a drink from Jon's bottle.
I agree though that it would send a better message to the rest of the country if he went and made a stand there anyway. I hope he gets a chance to do that in the GE.

14. I keep hearing that word used so I looked it up to make it official. |
|
1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
2. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
3.Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.
Barack is very intelligent but this doesn't sound like him as much as it does the Clintons. They are richer, feel intitled and demand favored treatment or else. Just saying, if you are going to use a word, make sure it doesn't fit your person more.

You are right, they have put whole new meanings to the words elite and elitist. I did a study that included the dynamics of third world countries, where the populations are made up of the rich (elite) and poor (peasant) population. It is obvious in these societies who the elite are, but in this country you can accuse anyone you want to stigmatize as this. They (repubs and Clintons) use this word in the same way that we used the word snob. In this instance I get the feeling it is being used to indicate "uppity 'N'". I could be wrong, but that is how it reads to me.

23. Those are GREAT subtitles/captions! |
|
I watch closed captioning on almost everything (even though I can hear) because it drives home what is said. I have NEVER seen any Comedy Central live show (like Stewart or Colbert) captioned properly. It's always late and misspelled.
Whoever did this captioning took care to do it. Which means they WERE NOT paid by AOL Time Warner. Who did the captions?

39. Hey Reb, you probably know them pretty well |
|
and Sen. Jim Webb does a brilliant analysis of the region, its heritage, its people and its economic woes through his books and other writings. He makes some great points about how this area got divorced from the Democratic Party and how after that, few have bothered to pay attention to them. I find so much of what's been said about these people and how they've been used by both parties (in the name of financial gain) to these people's detriment is just narrow and wrong. I loved that Edwards took a JFK/LBJ position here and I think Obama started down that path with his bus tour through PA. There just needs to be more outreach and even if they feel apart from the rest of the country, the rest of the country needs to embrace them and give them a chance for prosperity and education rather than draining them of their natural resources and stealing their brightest young people. All this racist ranting is sorta silly.
:hi:I see you're in Illinois now, where'd you grow up? And do you see yourself ever going back if from the region?

43. I am from Southern Illinois, born and raised |
|
My people came from Europe long ago and settled on the East Coast in Virgina and North Carolina or they moved on to the Appalachians. I also have American Indian (Cherokee) heritage from NC also. They all came together here in Southern Illinois. Much of the language spoken here in SI comes from those regions, more so in my childhood than now since we all have been more exposed to the rest of the world. You can still hear some of this dialog in the older (older than I am) population that has never left this area.
To be truthful, I lived for about eight years in NYC and lost most of my own old sayings there, and college professors shamed the rest of them out of me. According to them professionals are not suppose to say "you'nse", so I now try to say "you all". ;)
