1. David Brooks Is A Good Guy, Lost In The Wilderness
A few years ago he realized that the Right had failed utterly, that it was a hideous thing he no longer wanted to be a part of. The Republicans were no longer Conservatives; they were now just malevolant nutjobs.

He's trying to right himself, and getting closer by the month. He still spews nonsense much of the time, but coherent points are emerging with greater frequency. With a little work, we'll flip him to our side eventually.

2. 1964 this always baffled me

Goldwater was throw up basically so they could appease him and tell themselves later on that they had stood for their ideology and principle. There is no way that the country was going to make drastic change a year after the President was assassinated. We were clearly still in shock. Yes I understand the Civil Rights Amendment and all that but frankly it was just too soon.

What they found was that they needed was a ferocious nasty um..pit bull like Nixon.

And speaking of Southern Strategy here is my look at their newest Southern Strategy and the results so far

4. I agree that 1964 was a kind of "outlier" for the reasons you state.
But change had to come. The Democratic Party became no longer the party of Southern racists. It was cleansed and we are the better for it. The fact that the Republicans employed the Southern Strategy to get their foothold is to their everlasting shame and I always mention that to Northern Republicans when they start with how they are the party of the majority. I like to see them squirm...

3. Finally, someone who wasn't afraid to say the "truth"
about the conservative movement and about Sarah Palin. Let the "Hell Nos" rally around Palin. The American People gave a resounding "Hell No" to her candiacy this election and she will receive an even more resounding "Hell No" if she attempts to run in 2012. Hell no to the Christian Right, hell no to bigotry and inequality. Hell no to Grover Norquist, James Dobson, and Pat Robinson.

8. The "conservative" philosophy only failed in three areas
  1. Foreign policy;
  2. Domestic policy;
  3. Economic policy.
