16. he's actually been pretty good on things politically... |
|
On various topics he's been on the correct side of things or addresses good issues.
The main problem with him has always been, though, that he's just not that terribly bright. So, on many of these issues, he'll ask the right kind of questions, but unfortunately the dumber ones possible.

And, considering that after he shook hands with Obama, he immediately went for the hand sanitizer, the reaction to Bush isn't really much of a surprise.

Bush is a strange creature. I remember a while back an interview we did with this Irish reporter, a kind of post-mortem/debriefing thing. It was during *'s first term, I'm pretty sure, but after Iraq had started. She was given the questions she would ask (which he would answer), she had instructions not to look him in the eye or the interview would be over, and not to touch him and in any way or the interview would be over. She was expected to follow their rules to the letter. Then, if she didn't mess up she was told she'd 'get the photo-op', like it was something great big deal for an experienced reporter who had traveled all this way to interview him.
It's not the only place I've heard this kind of thing from, rumor-wise, but this was a direct "from the horse's mouth" kind of thing. Just Plain Weird.

he is too lazy or self-centered to reach his hand out to shake others' hands. Or maybe he is sulking because he is obviously not the center of attention or wielding any real power there now. But the no handshake decision seems to be his, not theirs.

|
I noticed the same thing in the video of him and Obama at the White House walking in the outside corridor to the Oval Office. His arm just hangs with little to no movement in it. Plus, his coke-jaw has been back for a month or more now. Makes me wonder what is up with him. Is he over-medicated, has he has a stroke, or maybe he has just lost all interest in even trying anymore! Jan. 20, 2009 can't come soon enough for me.

29. This is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen |
|
If Bush has any talent at all, it's as a superficial backslapper/greeter. That's what he excels at. That's what he did at Andover as a cheerleader. That's what he did at Yale instead of studying. That's what he did at the Texas Rangers. That got him his reputation as a "guy you'd like to have a beer with." For him to just shuffle in, looking at his shoes and ignoring/ignored by everybody is completely strange.

he doesn't put his hand out and they don't put their hand out. Seems absolutely mutual. Or he knew or felt he was going to be snubbed and so didn't bother to put his hand out.
What's even weirder is how much the people are smiling at the guy in front of Bush, the one whose hand is being shaken. Who is that? A lot of people seem genuinely happy to see him, which makes the difference in Bush even starker. Watch everyone stop smiling as that guy goes by and Bush comes into their range of vision.
Wow.

I would like to believe that it's a purposeful snub, but diplomatic decorum would trump any lingering resentments wouldn't it? I mean he is still representing the USA as a whole (or at least the American multi-nationals) I would hazard a guess that he has a virus or cold of some kind and all of them were told that beforehand along with the agreement not to shake hands with him.
But when I think about it more, why were they not even say patting him on the back? Or even saying a couple of friendly words as he passes. It's like he is invisible. And that is a good point about Bush not even looking up or making eye contact. Maybe there WAS some nasty threats given by the Decider as to what he's going to do to them, via trade policies, in his last few days if they don't follow his agenda.
But EVERYONE pretends to get along in these international meetings, even with leaders who don't agree politically, so it's still a little odd. I would love to hear more about this and find out the actual reason. I mean EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM declines as does Bush who is practically pushing the guy in front of him to move on and get through it.

I'm no expert on diplomatic protocols, nor do I want to be a killjoy, but several people pointed out in the comments to the HuffPo version of this story video exists showing Bush shaking the hands of all involved immediately prior to this scene. They claimed it would have been inappropriate protocol for Bush to greet people twice, but the other leaders had yet to greet each other.
I just don't think after the way the Senate treated convicted felon Stevens today to a standing ovation when he deserved being tarred and feathered almost as much as Bush, any deliberate snub was intended, however plausible it seemed at first.
I think HuffPo and CNN should know better. It does the progressive movement no favors to stoop to smears and innuendo, especially now we've already wiped the floor with those bozos' krazy klown kostumes. We beat them fair and square, by being fair and square, and certainly infinitely more fair and balanced than they.
Why stop now?
