Having read a good portion of Naomi Klein's book, The Shock Doctrine...I think I'm beginning to understand the source of America's hatred for Hugo Chavez and other Leftist, Latin American nations. Many of these nations underwent US-backed coups decades ago that established REAL dictatorships. Dictatorships that used torture and disappearances to put fear into the public. It was all in an effort to establish American economic control over the entire region. Hugo Chavez (and other Latin American nations) seem to be trying to break free of that and build a totally independent infrastructure. Smart for them, but we'll never support it with our completely pro-corporatist, Free Trade, Right-Wing establishment. And make no mistake, the Democrats are very much on board with this. Both Obama and Clinton have repeated the corporatist establishment myth of Hugo Chavez. Yes, he was anti-Bush...but if that's a reason to hate Chavez then I never will. What sane person would be pro-Bush??
It's funny though how Oliver Stone seems to be even more hated and loathed than Michael Moore. I wonder if this documentary will be as supported as Moore's films and shown on over 1,000 screens like Sicko? Somehow I doubted. It's not a knock on Moore, who I believe is very genuine. But there are just some things you know he'll never touch. Moore also seems to stick to the Left vs. Right paradigm (even though less so now after the fall of the Public Option...Moore seems to hate Democrats right now and I don't blame him) whereas Oliver Stone has talked about some highly controversial topics and this documentary about Chavez I could never see Moore doing. It's just too bold for him.
