1. Nice, but at this point, it's hard to believe that our side is any LESS divided...
....or maybe I've just been posting here too much lately....

3. Eh, we all have our own preferences
But I think as a constituency we are much happier with our choices than the GOP is.

2. Lately, it seems that the republicans are getting behind McCain.

4. Hillary is what will UNITE the "fractured" GOP.
Make no mistake my fellow Dems and Progressives, if Hillary is nominated the GOP WILL unite BIGTIME to defeat her. That is the glue that will bind them back together. This is not mere rhetoric, it is REALITY. Now, don't get me wrong, I admire Hillary and would support her if she was nominated. And I AM NOT "anti-woman" in any way, shape, or form. The issue is this PARTICULAR woman candidate. The presidency is the most personal vote we give, and the GOP rank and file, not to mention their establishment, HATE her to their core. Make no mistake about that. It was a GOP WOMAN (NOT a man) who asked John McCain recently, "How do we beat the BITCH ?!" This is deeply personal to them, and they will stop at nothing to take her down. I am a local Dem party official and have walked off countless miles of shoe leather in support of both men AND women Dem candidates. So again, please don't hit me with the gender card because that won't fly an inch with me. But Hillary's negatives are SO high, especially with even moderate Republicans, men, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, Independents, that if we nominate her they will rally massively around defeating her, galvanize and re-energize their party, and she may very well be defeated in the general election. This is objective truth, NOT a gender-based judgment. I would personally love to see a woman president. But this PARTICULAR woman is a huge general election risk. She has VERY HIGH negatives across the board, loses men bigtime, loses Independents, and gets virtually O crossover Republicans. She even risks losing some Dems and some blue territory in a year when we should win in a landslide. Polls right now show McCain beating her handily (one poll has McCain ahead of her six points in PA, a blue state) and other R's beating or nearly beating her. It would be tough for her to turn any red territory blue which we MUST do, and she does not unite and heal the country because she is viewed as so polarizing. Also, too many people out there have "Clinton fatigue" from the 1990's in a year when people want major change. We desperately NEED a candidate who can be seen a true uniter. Won't ever happen in a million years with Hillary. Barack Obama DOES unite the country, and he DOES have significant crossover appeal. He has proved it clearly in two primaries. With him, there would even be a "Republicans for Obama" organization. Please think this through very clearly and objectively. Look hard at the numbers and the realities. WE MUST NOT RISK BLOWING YET ANOTHER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION BY NOMINATING HILLARY.

6. Excellent! I agree 100%. A Clinton nomination will put the Republicans
in the White House. And I think this was part of the reason Hillary beat Obama in NH. As you know in an open primary, people can cross-party vote.

7. This argument--based on a pathetic fear of Republicans--is oft repeated, but not true.
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 06:58 PM by Perry Logan
Someone posted a Gallop poll at DU recently, indicating that most Republicans would NOT put forth any particular effort to defeat Hillary.

Besides, a candidate who doesn't "energize the opposition," sounds like a mediocre candidate.

8. I agree, I suppose Dems should nominate a conservative so as
not to energize the Republicans. Give me a break. The more Republicans fear Hillary the more I like her. The argument that we don't want to get the other side to turn out is weak and destructive. We democrats have the message that America agrees with. The polls are often wrong as well so don't forget that. In a strong democracy everyone should turn out to vote and we should not fear that. There are so many issues of higher priority than who MIGHT energize the Republicans. I suppose we should not discuss poverty in America, balanced taxes for the rich, our religious values or a host of other issues because that might energize the Republicants. Respectfully, hogwash. Republicans are going down. We know the tricks they will use and should be struggling against those, not trying to nominate a candidate that they can accept.

5. I agree...
...with RBINMAINE.

But Obama is also polarizing. And you know why. Those of us who don't care about a candidate's race or gender are outnumbered in the general public. Racism is not dead in the USA. A black or Hispanic prez is OK by me, but I would prefer a less "important" year for them to be in the running. On that note, it must be said that Obama has already and will continue to make amazing progress in how we talk about race in this country.
But if you're talking cross-over voters and independents, you have to not ignore Edwards.
But of course the big wig politico wisdom is Edwards is dead. God, I hope not!

Still, I'll vote for the Dem, regardless of race or gender. I wish I was in the majority. Maybe I am, but I have my doubts.

Don't forget....we have a looooog way to go.
