Calls mount for mayor to apologize as order to cancel training draws fire across nation
By IGNAZIO MESSINA BLADE STAFF WRITER
The pressure was on yesterday for Toledo's Carty Finkbeiner to apologize to a company of U.S. Marine Corps Reservists whose weekend urban-patrol exercises on downtown streets were canceled by the mayor.
Five city councilmen, one of whom is a former Marine, called the order an embarrassment and demanded the mayor apologize - similar to calls from hundreds of people locally and on Internet blogs across the nation.
Former Marine and Vietnam War veteran John Schaub, 62, the owner of Holland Dry Cleaners in western Lucas County, said news of the mayor's order brought tears to his eyes.
"I'm not an emotional guy, but after I put the newspaper down, it just really hit me," Mr. Schaub said.

2. Why Not In Grand Rapids |
|
It's my understanding that this unit is from Grand Rapids Michigan, so is there a reason why they don't train there?

Then the people will get an idea of what it looks like when foreign troops are parading around in your town.

that it's easier to oppress somebody that's a stranger in a place you're not from.
I'm serious.

My earliest memories are of occupation troops in my home town. Vienna was divided like Berlin, I lived in the American Zone but most of my relatives lived in the Soviet Zone. You can Imagine the fun of my mother-with Austrian papers-and me-with an American passport. My mother says that the general consensus among the people was that they wanted ALL of them out. In 1955 they left.

6. Mayor Finkbeiner is a true Patriot and an American Hero |
|
Posse Comitats Act of 1878 prevents the use of the Military from becoming a police force within US borders. Over the years there has been a lot of erosion of the act but most significantly by the Warner Defense Authorization Act of (pushed through just before the 2006 election). Now Dubya can use the Military against the US population in any way he sees fit.
For the first time in my memory, a heroic Mayor (Carty Finkbeiner - of Toledo Ohio) steps up and says NO (My heart went all aflutter with pride when I heard the story)! The effort by Mayor Finkbeiner, is an excellent first step in putting a stop to this effort to normalize the sight of troops in our streets. He should be commended, not demonized. Already the forces of evil (on the right) are calling for an apology by the Mayor. The consesqueses of an apology could be devastating for others Mayors that see this as a clear and present danger to our own populace.
What are the odds of this kind of Military exercise actually being a legitimate drill for establishing Marshal law in "other" countries. (Supposing there can ever be legitimacy for such a thing). These exorcises amounts to a rehearsal of establishing Marshal law in our major cities and counties right here in the U.S. of America. It's meant to habituate the populous to seeing troops in the street as an ordinary and wonderful thing because they are love us and are protecting us from something as yet undefined. Someone once said, "Tyranny will come to your door in a uniform". I for one want to put a stop to this sprint to fascism that is happening in this country. Remember this, the laws preventing Roman Legions from entering into the city of Roam were implemented for a very good reason.
Lets call they Mayor's office and with a show of support

If you get the chance to read the (annoying) tickertape that runs at the bottom, you'll see that the mayor of Berkeley, CA, told military recruiters to take a hike and was forced to apologize. All the more reason to support Mayor Finkbeiner.
Just one thing I want to mention. I see it all over DU, so I'm not picking on you, chazoo. The term is "martial law", as in Mars, the god of war. I'm a stickler for this kind of thing because I think that words and their etymology are vitally important for understanding.

This is an example of the relationship of the local police to the military leaving out the elected officials. This is a bigger issue than if the military were allowed to play war in the city or not. This is an issue whereby the state and city elected officials are bypassed by the military and their own police dept.
I would even add that in order to perform this 'exercise' the military should be required to get a permit(as would any entity) for a "demonstration" which they did not do. The police department may have an advisory sign off on the permit but are not allowed have unitary authority over authorization.
So I think the bigger issue is who gave the police or the military the right to usurp local government.

WTF!!!!!!!!!! I pretty sure these fuckers have all the space they need for training, thats why we have set aside millions and millions of acres of land, air and sea for them. To say this is going to help them for Middle East operations is the biggest crock of shit I think I have ever heard in my life. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that nowhere in the Middle East is anything like downtown Toledo. Trust me I've been there. If this isn't the most blatant show of conditioning I don't know what is. If this doesn't run a chill up your spine then your are already beyond hope. I don't know how many true Jarheads are on this sight, but I think you need to get on the horn and tell your boys to knock their shit off. :grr: :banghead:
P.S. ALWAYS be "startled" by camoflouged soldiers with M16 walking in your town. I don't give a fuck what the reason is!
