Inventor of the "Amnesia Defense". During the Iran-contra hearings Meese drew a complete blank on everything that had happened to him in the preceding two years. Without ever once saying, "I forgot", Meese neverthless denied having any specific recollection of anything that had happened to him while serving as chief political advisor and Attorney General in the Reagan Whitehouse. Senate interrogators, stunned by this bravura performance, never laid a glove on him.
Meese established a model which has been successfully followed by the Bush administratioin from day one. Its most notable successes have been the right-wing idealogues who finessed their way through Senate confirmation hearings to seats on the nations highest courts.
