Isn't Huckabee's Victory A Positive for Democrats? |
|
To me, he's the easiest to defeat in the general election. Either McCain or Guiliani would be much, much tougher.

1. Who thought a fucking IDIOT like Bush could win? |
|
Huckabee is a charmer. Don't underestimate him. Plenty of old white folks would hold their noses, count on him not to get "too religious" and vote for him because he can put a sentence together and looks like a "regular guy."
Plus, he can tell a joke...on himself. Humility is always a winner.
Easy to beat? Naaah. Rudy, the hubris-laden fuck, HE'S easy to beat.

5. Yep - I heard an Iowan say she was voting for him cause he plays in a band. |
|
She was "intrigued" by him for this and thinks he's charming.
Nevermind he's a creationist nut who's got a disturbing agenda to force us all to honor his God. That stuff doesn't matter I guess.

Bush was declared the victor through a combo of help from his brother in FLA and help from his father's friends on the Supreme Court.
Huckabee doesn't have those kinds of connections.

14. Sure, he didn't win, but he "won" nonetheless. |
|
Call it what you want, the asshole took the WH.
I'm not going to sit here and play word games. Bush managed to "acquire" the WH not once, but twice. And he didn't need the Supremes (where he WON the 'election,' five to four) on the second go-round.
I don't want Huckabee to do the same sort of 'acquiring' of the Presidency, by hook, crook or ballot box. That's my point.

4. The ultraRight/ultraChristians want to force everyone in America to be as they are. |
|
What his victory means is a continuance of the polarization of ideals we've been seeing in America over the last few decades. We'll get a better sense of how many of them there are, and how far they'll go to get their way.
Which of course, will polarize the not-so-ultra right among them.
They've been corrupting the country behind the scenes for a while now, so we'll get to see them up close and nasty-like, as they seek to acheive their goals.
Let their exclusion and intolerance be their undoing.
I'm also suprised that there aren't more threads about this topic on DU right now.

McCain is too unstable to sustain the scrutiny during the six months when he'd already be the presumed nominee. He will melt down.
Giuliani is also unstable and has 300,000 tons of baggage (approximating the weight of the scrapped World Trade Center). Millions of people hate his guts in his own hometown, which happens to be media central. The firefighters and the September 11th relatives hate his guts, and some of them will be very dedicated about bringing him down.
Huckabee is smooth, unknown, and has the ignorant dumbshit advantage that Americans seem to love in the likes of Bush and Reagan. But a lot more eloquent if he needs to be. Beware.

IMO, he will not have the youth, intellectuals, minority or non-fundie voters in his camp. Repukes of the corporate and others of the tax cut flavor may not support him either.
Most importantly, IMO: we'll get a good read on how much power fundies wield in the GE. I would guess, their power is not as much as we think. If correct, their seat at the table may end up being quite small in determining future leaders.

This guy will bring the fundies out in droves. I do believe he will self-destruct, but he is a charmer. And he's even speaking a somewhat populist message. I could see him beating Clinton. I don't see him beating Obama or Edwards.
Republicans have a history of electing light weights - frankly this guy scares me a bit.

McCain is the Republicans' best chance. And a Huckabee win hurts Romney big...which opens up the door for McCain.

20. I'm not sure I agree, Yavin-- Huckabee would be very tough |
|
Ostensibly McCain or Giuliani would be better national candidates, but they inspire deep anger among many Republican voters-- let alone Independents and Democrats. Huckabee doesn't always inspire support, but there's very little in the way of anti-McCain enmity against Huckabee, IOW he has a nice base to work from and gain supporters. He seems to be able to fire up the base much than we often think, while still retaining economic conservatives.
In fact, in a recent national poll, Huckabee did the best-- he beat Hillary Clinton handily in a head-to-head matchup, while being quite competitive with both Obama and Edwards. We need to take him seriously, he'll be a tough candidate to compete against.

22. I have a hard time believing that the GOP is going to let him win.... |
|
those corporate cons combined with the neocons have a lot of power and money. They may want that xtian vote but they damn sure don't want one to be elected. Geo Bush only pretends to be a xtian, but Huck's the real thing. He's running on being the outsider, Bush was NEVER an outsider. It's comparing apples to oranges.
