"We can't nominate Barack Obama because he's --gasp--a BLACK guy!"
I have no patience for this shit. None. Zero tolerance. Yes, racism still exists in America. Far too much of it. But a lot of it is subtle and unrecognized, even by those who harbor it. A state that's 97% white stood up with more than double the number of Republican delegates and said "we believe in this BLACK guy."

Don't give me this shit that he CAN'T win, because I don't buy it.

He's not even my chosen candidate. I prefer Edwards for several different reasons, but NOT ONE of those reasons is because he's white. I've exhausted my rationale over the past few days. I don't think I can add anything to it at this point.

I'm done.

But to read, here of all places, that we shouldn't nominate Obama specifically BECAUSE he's black, for whatever reason, simply disgusts me.

I think it's time I took another break before I say something I'll end up regretting...not because I'd be wrong, mind you, but because it might get me in trouble, or ruin my reputation as a gentleman.

I've had about enough of this shit. I think it's a bullshit argument that stinks of inherent racism itself and THAT JUST DOESN'T CUT IT. Not here.

Argue that Obama spit in the face of the gays. Okay. I can buy that. Argue that his whole campaign is based on "vote for me because I'm a ROCK STAR." All right. I can buy that too. But DO NOT try to sell me that we shouldn't seriously consider him because he's BLACK and it'll bring out the racists.

Makes me want to puke. And makes me want to get as far as possible from those who spew this shit.

So I'm going to spend a little time calming down and thinking of all the reasons I shouldn't just take another break.

In the meantime, everyone have a wonderful night.

1. You can dream all you wish
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 03:44 AM by MalloyLiberal
You can dream all you wish, you can say America is better than that, but the fact is, there are a lot of racists in this country, and Obama will fail miserably to pick up their votes. And he does need them if he wants to win. The election will be 50/50 and decided again by Diebold machines. Your choice.

If you want to live in a dreamworld and pretend that there are no racial divides in this country (as Jena Six recently showed), feel free.

Say hello to your new President, President Huckabee. Obama is the Republicans' wet dream. Edwards is their worst nightmare.

4. HILLARY is the Repukes' wet dream
Sexism is far more ingrained in our society than racism, even. And she's so universally loathed on both sides of the political spectrum (except for her followers who just don't get how much she is loathed), that the Repukes wouldn't even need Diebold to beat her.

At least Obama stands a fighting chance.

I'd still prefer Edwards over either one, however.

6. So you won't vote for Hillary because Republicans are sexist?
REPUBLICANS? Look in the fucking mirror. We don't need Republican votes. But YOU won't vote for a woman.

3. An Obama win would be a great turning point for America, but I wish
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 03:46 AM by caligirl
he would add the word courage to his message when he talks about hope. Sad to say the racsist will come out because they are as stupid and mean as a snake. Call them on it and ask them to join in voting for the ideas and courage of the man.

I support Edwards...

That being said...

If we as Democrats fail to nominate Barack Obama for the sole reason of his being black, and because we are afraid that racist America will rise up and give the Presidency to a Huckabee, or a Romney, or even a McCain...

After all this country has seen and been through the last 7 years...

THEN RACIST AMERICA GETS EXACTLY WHAT IT DESERVES.

And so do those partisan hacks here, who peddle the most vile of "concern troll" filth!

Right-wing Supreme Court, endless war, finishing touches on the corporate take-over of America, etc...

We will have deserved ALL OF IT!

11. If the next election is about whether USA is racist instead of Republican failure
we lose and the Republicans have dodged a total asskicking by Clinton or Edwards. Obama will be ineffective in the electoral college, struggling to hold mid atlantic states and being noncompetitive in all the southern states except perhaps Virginia(and I doubt he can win there either). Obama brings no additional states to the table. Most of the Republicans I know were resigned to Hillary winning(many secretly want the Clinton years back). They sure have a new spring in their step with possibility of facing a black guy from Illinois with a thin resume and a very unfortunate name.

12. He Black?
MG -

Just Kidding - Well there always will be Some? Racist out there!!! but I Believe were past that threshold - were it would make a huge in-pack - maybe 10% on there side!!! (Vote) so leaves 90% Vote left - Not counting new? Voters and NON Voters? - and believe it or not - i think - even some? (Former racist) would even vote For a black man (the enemy of my enemy crap) ...so That 10% can me narrowed down or offset some!

Also think they would go after a Women! Women get pregnant / time of mo / bla bla bla...(might not help as much - because allot of women!!!)

Oh yea - don't want to leave out the pretty boy Edwards - yuk a TRIAL LAWER...now how many jokes have you heard on that (I think that's a disadvantaged/class or should be?)

Bottom line - they? will use all and any reason to go after any of the Above

I hope and Prey - that the US is Above that - but Be Prepared if it go's to the gutter with them...

If He Gets? the Nomination

14. Relax...He won Iowa....and brought in a record turnout to boot! Lily White Iowa
Some prejudices just don't face reality. Reality is that obama not only won in a non-blue lily white state, he won overwhelmingly and brought out such a big turnout that the word record in and understatement!

I think some of this obmama can't win in the general because he is black is just reaching for something to knock obama on because they favor another candidate. This may be understandable, but we really should examine ourselves before we go so far as to basically argue on the basis of race (or sex) as an underlying reason not to nominate someone. It is disgusting and I am going to call it what it is....racist and sexist. It is sorta like trying to say you have nothing against blacks, but your daughter better not date one because it would have repercussions.... We can do better than that.

18. I don't doubt some slack jawed yokels will come out in droves
Strictly to vote against Obama's color but, guess what, they more than likely would have voted rethug anyway. If there are lingering bigotries anywhere within our party that would cause people to jump ship then they're not Democrats anyway and need to re-register and haul their asses to the other side officially.

I think it would be great to break the ethnic barrier in the White House, personally I don't really want Obama to be the one only because I'm an Edwards supporter. I don't think, at least I hope, there isn't enough ignorance left in this country to make his skin color a deciding factor in the GE. If there is we're still stuck in the 19th century and we're doomed as a nation.

19. I think the Iowa argument is a little naive
First, racism still exists. I see it and hear it all the time. People may not make the obviously racist comments as they once did (unless of course the comments are directed at illegal Mexicans where there seems to be no boundaries), but I still hear the indirect comments made and I see the eye rolling when certain subjects come up. Most of those comments are prefaced by people saying, "I'm not racist, but..."

I think you find more explicit racism where the population is more diverse. If the population in Iowa is actually 97% white, I would say most Iowans have never had the opportunity to be racists.

Let's not forget the campaign ran against Harold Ford jr in Tenn. I'm afraid that Obama will face a lot of that, but I think he can handle it. The question is will fringe voters be influenced by it.

As a country we've made some progress, but we still have a long way to go. I think an Obama candidacy will tell us a great deal about ourselves as a country.
