Republicans are not tame. They're barely housebroken. Every notable Repug, from the President to Congress to those wacky fellows at FOX News, are like a feral dog just waiting for the scent of blood in the air.

Right now they seem subdued, but that's because we haven't yet chosen a target for them. They're playing at choosing one out of half a dozen barking mad motherfuckers for THEIR nomination for POTUS, but, bear in mind, they've got one eye on our side of the fence just waiting to see what kind of meat we're going to be throwing their direction.

As soon as the nomination is announced, the savage beasts are going to be crawling out of the woodwork, claws and fangs ready to tear into his or her tender flesh. What the Repugs will bring to the fray will make the mudslinging of the Democratic primary look like the games of preschoolers.

We'll shake hands with the Republicans as soon as they admit that their religion, and their religious book, should NOT be the answer to all arguments about the nature of the cosmos, the history of the human race, and whether gays have the right to live in peace. We wouldn't put up with the Taliban here in the United States, and we will NOT put up with similar inflexibility from them either.

We'll kiss and make up when they recognize that we have a duty to this planet, to all the other forms of life that live here, and that we are both responsible for the damage we've caused and for striving to fix as much of it as we can. When they roll up their sleeves and stand beside us, working to make this world a better place again. When they too decide that the long-term fate of their children and grandchildren are more important than short-term profits.

We'll play nice as soon as they stop insulting us, insulting our intelligence, treating us like second-class citizens, and tell people like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, and their ilk that they DO NOT speak for them. As soon as they make it clear they DON'T want us jailed, or killed, for the crime of disagreeing with them or the Bush administration. As soon as they stand up and say to their representatives that they respect the Constitution and don't respect anyone who refuses to abide by it.

We'll work for "unity" as soon as they repudiate all the evil that has been done in their names--as soon as they call for justice for those who've been ignored in Katrina's aftermath, those who've been sent off to war to die for a lie, those who've been turned out on the street because we have other priorities than protecting the most vulnerable among us.

Until then...

No quarter given, no quarter asked.

It's on.

When we rose up to break the shackles that bound our human brethren, when we stood up and entreated our government to grant our sisters the right to vote, and when we stood up to prevent tyrants from dominating Europe not just once, but twice. It whispered into our hearts and minds when we raised our voices to grant equality to the downtrodden among us, when we decried the hideous cost of the war in Vietnam and brought out soldiers home. When our workers demanded safer working conditions and better pay, we stood by them and forced the corporations to change.

It whispers now, in one of the darkest times in our history, when our leaders have strummed the chords of fear and terror to drive the hope from our hearts.

America used to the land of big shoulders, big hearts, and big ideas. A place where, if someone faltered, there was always someone nearby to catch the fall. Where those who could lend strong arms and backs to rebuild their neighbors' homes if they were destroyed were all too happy to do so.

That spirit, the best thing about America, is not lost. It still resides within each of us. It is our duty to take up the call of our nation, to stand up for what has again been lost or set aside, and to cry out. "This is my country! And I have a right to be proud of it!"

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Mythsaje/232

===

Imagine an America where people had justifiable pride in themselves as Americans. A land that could get things done. Positive things that changed lives for the better. Not a Utopia, but a society with a belief in the power of people working toward a better world for everyone rather than fighting tooth and nail to succeed at the expense of one's neighbors.

Competition has its admirers as a motivation to pursue excellence. But it has always been my belief that the greatest motivator in this regard is competing against oneself, to always strive to do better than one did previously.

So what's stopping the United States from trying to better itself, to become a greater nation than it's ever been? Greed, selfishness, and, simply, a lack of vision on the part of those who think they should be running things. People who rarely think any farther ahead than the next fiscal quarter.

We can do better than that. We can BE better than that. We CAN be patriotic about something other than war. We can improve ourselves by striving to be better than we were, not by setting ourselves against someone else to see who can rise higher.

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Mythsaje/228

===

Now we're fighting amongst ourselves to determine who the best Democratic candidate may be, hoping beyond hope that THIS person will be the one to turn the tide. We shouldn't be fighting amongst ourselves, even considering the stakes. When we vilify candidates other than the one we choose, we're hurting ourselves in the long run because we cannot KNOW who may or may not have the wherewithal to do what needs to be done.

We're all on the same side, even if we see different candidates as being the one to lead the charge against the neo-cons and their insane agenda. We should remember that our own chosen candidate, assuming we have one, is simply the one WE perceive as having the best chance of doing that and that the others may or may not do the same.

We can't let our frustration completely take over. We have to allow ourselves some distance and perspective, lest we alienate the very people with whom we share the most.

In a fight like this one, every single ally is a boon. Let's not forget that.

6. Right to the point
and remember in our usual messy primary process that the Dem party ALONE is currently offering democracy and choice. Unless we remember that the semblance of a fir election this fall is a charade substituting for a war on democracy itself we will have squandered hope for the nation by the ordinary bickering and grouchiness which is natural, sometimes endearing- but blinding us to the real struggle we face. This is not about the fussiness and dissatisfactions of ordinary competition but a common fight to restore and preserve basic law and regain always imperfect democracy. Not one single personage in this nation has the stature to do all that and be a slick, inevitable candidate too. You might notice the GOP doesn't even care how bad their offerings are, because their fight is simply one for power and wealth and the satisfaction of dangerous desires against the commons.

This is a clarion call for all of us. We are the wave and we try to pick the best surfer who can stay on.

Nooooo! He's one of the few people I argue with here that I actually admire:) We've locked horns and then agreed more than a few times, and it was a great learning experience!

If it's a "please don't go" that he's looking for, count me in! And this would be a first... generally, I give the ol' "don't let the screen door hit you in the ass on the way out!"

Mythsage is cocky... that's probably why we lock horns. Two cocky jerks in one convo can get heated:)

28. Happy New Year Will ...
I saw Mythsaje's 'Dear John' thread, and completely understood why Mythsaje is so frustrated.

Last night, Mythsaje believed a racist argument was being used in our forums, and became outright disgusted by it .... I don't want to call out any specific DUers, but one in particular made the argument that a black man should not be nominated, because then just say hello to 'President Huckabee'! ..... The argument was made in a coarse, insensitive manner, and with a great deal of self righteous belligerence .... That poster is not my kind of DUer : vicious and ego absorbed, but not completely unusual here ....

I would tell Mythsaje to rise above even his/her own angst, and keep a finger on the tiller here, for our benefit.

Why let little minds capsize your sturdy sabot ? .... FUCK THEM ...... Dont give them the power, Mythsaje ....

Please Mythsaje ..... Take a break .... re-center, then return renewed ....

Happy New Year to All ....

33. Mythsaje, I love your passion. Breathe deeply, and stay for the next round!
I don't completely agree with this statement, though:

"When we vilify candidates other than the one we choose, we're hurting ourselves in the long run because we cannot KNOW who may or may not have the wherewithal to do what needs to be done."

We shouldn't *vilify*, but we must not lose our confidence in ourselves to see through empty rhetoric. Some candidates are more corporately beholden than others! And history has shown that too much ill-considered followership leads to a loss of freedom. Input from the grassroots (some see them as the unwashed and illiterate masses) is the lifeblood of our democracy!

36. Count me in the fan club
I've been reading the posts here nearly every day since 9-11-2001 and I can honestly say that Mythsaje is in that special club that makes this place worth coming to day in and day out. There are others (alas some long gone), but each gives beautiful passionate voice to what beats in the heart of every progressive human being. That voice sustains us through these dark times. Thank you, all.

39. About that 'Fighter, not an Appeaser' line
Hard not to agree with that one. (Does anyone else ever wonder if Alan Colmes has to shave in the shower, to avoid private time confrontations with mirrors? Will it eventually turn him into a vampire?)

And yet, for me, that's also getting a little uncomfortably close to that classic Karl Rove/Leo Strauss Republican frame. The one that says "standing up to terrorism/evil/outsiders/illegal minorities/people-not-like-us" justifies *everything*, including throwing out the Bill of Rights and Constitution, for the sake of defending the security of the Heimat (that's "Homeland", in the original German, I think), and expanding the effectiveness of executive power.

You know, you sort of hear Obi Wan reminding you to "stay away from the Dark Side" if you pause a minute...

Hesitate for too long and Yeats (Eliot? Chinua Achebe?) is whispering in your ear, "...The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity..."

And the trap springs shut.

All of a sudden you're sharing a world view with Hobbes, Malthus, and Dumbya's "Base", the perspective that holds human existance to be (necessarily, a priori, for the majority of poor slobs), "nasty, brutish and short."

Because "the Best" are always a minority, aren't they?

Defending Byzantium, or manning Hadrian's Wall in the waning days of the Empire, with crosses instead of eagles on their standards, what were the last Legionnaire's asking themselves, as they turned to face the hordes of pagan barbarians/people-not-like-them?

...I didn't get a lot of sleep last night, and it's been a hell of a day so far, so I may be reaching for something that's past my ability to share right now.

Thanks for the point of departure, anyway, Flying Squirrel. (Great DU name.)
