VALERIE PLAME BELIEVED SADDAM HAD WMD
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 09:04 PM by LSK
Page 131-132 from Fair Game:

"The long-expected "shock and awe" invasion of Iraq began March 20,2003. Like most others in the CIA, I watched the bombardment of government buildings and the destruction of Iraqi infrastructure in the little CNN picture at the corner of my computer screen. In my office, it felt like our work was over and our reason for being had been overtaken by reality. I felt we had failed miserably; it was a disaster in the making. I thought there was a good chance that our troops could encounter some sort of WMD offensive. Time and again Saddam had demonstrated his ruthlessness when he felt his regime was threatened, and in the pictures on my screen it was being decimated by the overwhelming firepower of the U.S. military. In those opening days of assault, I felt like I was holding my breath, waiting to hear that Saddam had unleashed a nuclear weapon we had not found or used deadly chemicals on the battlefield against U.S. troops. As we watched the war unfold, Joe and I both felt hopeless."

Even Valerie Plame was fooled by Bush.

1. I'd bet she had better insight than Chimpy
If she thought he had WMD, I see that as supporting Bush's claim, not because of Bush's claim.

6. From what she said to Maher...
I got the impression that at one time, she had faith in the government. She may have been giving the misadministration the benefit of the doubt.

7. immanent threat
When the inspectors left Iraq during the Clinton administration, they had accounted for 95% of all the WMD. It was thought by that team that while there might be some weapons left in places that had remained un-inspected. The other possibility was that the weapons had been destroyed during the first Iraq War and/or destroyed by Operation Desert Fox.

Whatever the case, the presumption that Iraq was an immanent threat did not exist; therefore saying that there might have been weapons doesn't reach the threshold necessary to trigger an occupation/invasion of another country. This yammering of about whether or not there were weapons is a cop-out. The question that should have been asked and answered was "is there an immanent threat."

BTW, our leadership needs to demand that the policy of preemptive war been changed. Now. Right now.

9. Exactly. I'm in 100% agreement. All the rest is mere obfuscation.

8. im sure a lot of people were suprised that saddam was telling the truth all along
and had NONE. And Bush was lying all along and said he had PROOF.

The inspectors were there to see.
Saddam sent all of the paperwork and Bush redacted it to nothing.

Saddam - total bastard that told the truth. Bush had him killed for power and revenge and to prove his dick is bigger than Saddams or his dads.
W - total bastard that lies his ass off. Has the world fed to him with a silver spoon.

10. Saddam did have WMD. Reagan, Rumsfeld and Cheney provided them to him.
And when Saddam used them the United States Congress took action but Reagan vetoed the sanctions. No one really knew whether Saddam still had WMD at the time of the US invasion but everyone did know that Iraq was not a threat to the United States. But once the invasion began, many people who opposed it were worried that our troops might have to face WMD.
