Has any legislation been passed, or are we in the same place we were in 2000?

As an aside why don't we have voting on the weekends?

3. Depends on who you believe re HR 811 (Holt amendment to the Help America Vote Act of 2002)

Some organizations advocating election transparency are pretty satisfied with the bill, such as the Verified Voting Foundation, founded by Stanford CS prof David Dill. This article on the VVF website describes their position on the Holt bill.

Other groups, notably Bev Harris' Black Box Voting, opposed it. See Harris' 2006 article in Online Journal.

Brad Friedman's BradBlog has a great listing of articles and other resources on the Holt bill.

Both Dennis Kucinich and Maxine Waters dropped their co-sponsorship of the Holt bill, with Kucinich http://www.bradblog.com/?p=4788">reintroducing "The Paper Ballot Act" (HR 6200), a bill he filed in the last Congress, requiring the hand counting of paper ballots in Presidential elections.

It's also noteworthy that the Holt bill drew a fair amount of support from the GOP, which automatically makes it suspect in my view.
