I am not sure what the exact number is, but Fox is always going to get only the Archie Bunker market which is about 30% of total market. That leaves around 70% for all the other more mainstream networks to compete for.

If it was just NBC against FOX, NBC would be getting 70% of the market to Fox's 30%. Head to head, all the other networks would clobber FOX.

I just had this argument with a friend of mine. He kept bragging about Fox's ratings and I had to set him straight.

Fox is only going to get the 30% of people who still love Bush. The other 70% will never watch Fox.

Example:

Conservative Viewers

Fox 30%

Total: 30%

Mainstream Viewers

NBC 25%
CBS 25%
ABC 20%

Total: 70%

Fox beats everyone because the three mainstream news networks are taking viewers away from one another. Take away two of the three mainstream networks and put Fox against the only remaining network and Fox gets hammered because the viewers would go to the remaining mainstream network!

On Edit: I didn't even include CNN but that splits the mainstream audience even more.

5. Because as bad as the other networks are they are not
propaganda machines for the Bush administration. Did you catch Condi's "oops that mic is on" moment? Where she said this: "My FOX guys, I love every single one of them." Fox news considers being fair and balanced, reporting what the White House tells them without question. Anyone who does question them is labeled anti-American. If there were another network that was proud to be a mouthpiece for the neo-cons in government Fox would lose viewers. Welcome to DU and if you are really interested in Fox and their ratings watch the movie Outfoxed. It uses their own words and their own people to show exactly what they are.

2. It's Faux Noise
No one thinks of them as anything other than a radical Bush mouth piece. Their ratings equal those who approve of W. And it's going downhill fast.
