Need some vibes and prayers for my mom
My mom ,who has heart failure, will soon have to put her dog Spotty to sleep. The dog a dachshund, has cancer. He had surgery about 6 months ago and was told he had 3-4 months left. Its real hard for her. My wife said she would take the dog when its time. Afraid it will be this weekend. Please send the famous DU vibes and prayers this way for my mom in coping with this sad outcome.
Thanks!

12. I know how tough that is and I hope your mother will be able to find comfort
in the memories of the good days. We had a dachshund and were devastated when he died. Bless her heart. Strong thoughts heading her way.

14. Mom might not want to be shielded from the event
so please ask her whether or not she wants to hold her best friend and say goodbye. The process is a very peaceful one, just an IV insertion, a syringe of phenobarb, and a last sigh as the dog passes out of pain.

I've insisted on holding animals I've had to have put down. I've always thought I'd have a calming effect on them and that I owed it to them for those years of unconditional affection.

It's only later that I've felt like a murderess, wondering if a few more days filled with pain might have been worth it for the animal. However, animals themselves tell us when they've had enough, and my animals had done so.

Anyway, your mom needs to make the choice. Some people just can't stand it. Others want to say goodbye.

15. Oh no! Poor doxie! Poor mom, too, she's got enough on her plate
in addition to losing her beloved companion. I wish her peace and hope she takes comfort in knowing that she loved and cared for him until the end--what a lucky pet. Those wienerdogs, they break your heart!

18. Good vibes sent
Tell them both that you love them, and then tell them again. Make your mom laugh, and give the dog a treat or a brushing. Love is most important, and genuine laughter is better than any medicine.

I've been there and I know how hard it is. Would she consider adding another dog into her life? Certainly not as a replacement, but as a way to bring back a little joy into her life. I'm sending prayers for your Mom.

25. Okay Bob....
And bless all the Little Doggies...This one will likely be even tougher on Mom as a reflection of her own mortality....the idea of a puppy has value, especially if the pup is provided for-has a home to go to, just in case...say a promise from you or another family member if that is possible. My Mom is also COPD +10 years so a good bit of life with a puppy IS possible. That said, walk uprightly this weekend and help Mom and Dog as best you can...these are the moments for which she instilled her love and wisdom in you. As a son,you have my prayers....

29. I'm so sorry.
Our baby boy kitty went to his rest on Mothers' Day 1995 after being w/ us for 20 years. He had liver disease. We have no children, and it fractured my heart. After refusing to have another furbaby for three years, I went to our shelter to donate in memory of our friend who was so gracious to let him be put to rest on their country property. That's when our baby girl 'called to me'. It was one of the best decisions I have made in life, saving one of these sweet ones.
Love and prayers thru my tears for your family.

43. Spotty is now waiting by the rainbow.
Today my mom called to tell me it was time for Spotty. My wife and I went over to my moms' and we drove her and Spotty over to the animal hospital. I made all the arrangements at the hospital. My mom wanted to be with her beloved Spotty till the end. My wife was also with them. My mom took it hard but knew it was for the best. He wasn't going to the bathroom and he was throwing up bile today. He had cancer and after the last surgery it had come back without any hope. Its always hard making that decision for your special pet. Thanks everyone for all your kind remarks and thoughts. DUers are the greatest.
