All those folks who think the Great Lakes states ought to share their water:
I've got 3' of snow here.

Help yourself.

Bring a shovel.

Dress warmly.

BTW - you know how New York is a high tax state? The road in front of my house is bare pavement, shoulder to shoulder.

2. It is not your water
Unless, perhaps you have an agreement with God? The US government? :P

Sorry about the bad weather, have you considered moving?

:P

My ass is hurting from all the shoveling here.

Water is life. There's a reason we don't live in water-starved areas.

On edit: Why am I not surprised you are in L.A.?

5. I consider the six weeks a year of bad weather the price we pay for
the other 46 weeks of good weather. Of course, my definition of good weather is anything above freezing that I don't have to wade through.

6. It's not "our" water, but we residents are stewards of the Great Lakes basin.

It's pretty much a closed loop system that wouldn't be able to tolerate the removal of large amounts of water.

Pictures of the Aral Sea.

3. Actually - we're going to have some problems here ourselves this summer.
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 04:53 PM by Kittycat
Because of the warm temperatures, it caused water to evaporate instead of absorb in to the ground, like it normally does in the spring (since our ground is still frozen). Now the normal run off is gone. We've already been on water restrictions in the suburbs the past few years. I'm thinking that instead of every other day - we're probably go to a no auto-water for the hottest months this summer. Similar to a couple years back - maybe worse.

ETA: not that I'm trying to keep my grass green, but I do have a nice organic garden. I plant it each year with our most used crops, to help with money, health - and because I'm able to give to my neighbors as well. We do plan on using a big run-off tank in the back this year for watering, but it would be nice to have back-ups on timers for when we're not home. We have to handwater everything instead.

8. The Great Lakes region is experiencing a drought.
Lake levels have bee consistently down on all five lakes for the last 15 yrs. The only reason people haven't noticed is because its been accumulating for 15000 yrs.

9. Canada has a say by International Treaty
See:http://www.ijc.org/rel/agree/water.html concerning the Boundary Waters Treaty.

The U.S. cannot unilaterally decide to use Great Lakes water for any purpose other than those delineated by treaty.
