Hawaii Legislature Considers Ban on Artificial Sweetener, Aspartame:
One Sponsor is Speaker of the House!

Regarding bills in the Hawaii Legislative session to Ban Artificial sweetener and neurotoxin, Aspartame, House Bill 2680 and Senate Bill 2506

Stephen Fox of Santa Fe, Managing Editor of the Santa Fe Sun News and prime New Mexico moving force behind the legislative efforts to ban aspartame, commented on the great consumer progress implicit in these two bills in Hawaii:

This is wonderful news coming from Hawaii; the Legislators and their bill drafters saw the merit in keeping almost all of the same language from the 2006 and 2007 New Mexico bills, especially regarding the states' rights and their obligation to protect citizens health, which are not "prempted by massive failures at the FDA.

Thank you, Rumsfeld and Reagan. Assholes.

3. Yeah, but which is worse, this or high-fructose corn syrup?
It's a toss-up. I like just plain, regular ol' sugar. We should go back to saccharin but probably won't.

Edit to say -- it's really not as sweet as they say it is. I've swapped it out on people for their Equal or Sweet n Low and they liked it just fine. You can get it at health food stores and a LOT of regular grocery stores now.

6. If it really is a health-risk (and I have my doubts)...
... a simple warning label should suffice.

9. There are several studies showing bad effects.
As a matter of fact, I think the FDA was NOT going to approve it but somehow Reagan got it okayed because Rumsfeld was his buddy (it was Rumsfeld's company).

If you're really interested, I'll find some research for you.

11. Well, this is Hawaii we're talking about.
Though I'm all for banning both aspartame AND high fructose corn poison, I'm sure the sugar cane industry probably had a hand in this legislation.

12. Not so sure about that...
I'm not sure sugar cane is very big in Hawaii anymore. It was when I lived there, but I have heard that the land values are so much higher now that many of the cane farms have been sold for other uses, like golf courses.
