2. MA Democrats have had a habit of nominating some very poor candidates |
|
Romney is no fluke. He was preceded by three GOP governors.

4. Several factors played into Mitt's hands. |

Several factors played into Mitt's hands:
o Massachusetts, because it is a very Democratic-leaning place, has often balanced their monolithically-Democratic legislature with a Republican Governor. Frank Sargeant, Bill Weld, Paul Cellucci, and then acting-governess Jane Swift. And Ed King was a very conservative Democrat. Mike Dukakis was practically the only liberal in the bunch.
o This is facilitated by loonies like Barbara Anderson and her CLT, Citizens for Limited Taxation. They are a classical right-wing "We've got ours, screw everyone else!" bunch of rich twits, but they have a disproportionately loud voice in Massachusetts, being strongly supported by the media as they are.
o After Cellucci left for his Bush-buddy ambassadorships, Jane Swift, the Republican Lt. Gov was the heir-apparent. But Romney needed a launching place for his 2008 Presidential bid and Swift had had a few embarrassing incidents so he and his friends unceremoniously kicked Jane to the curb and installed Romney as the candidate in her stead.
And the rest is history.

Really no other way to go about it. He promised to be a Bill Weld style of Republican, which is still pretty popular down there.

7. He Lied........... He pretended to be a Moderate Rep. |
|
And in a State where the legislature is VERY blue, and Taxes are high, Moderate Reps have a history of winning here.
He is pretty despised here now. I think McCain could beat him here.

10. Lying was a big reason and as said above the Dems historically |
|
run very beatable candidates for Governor. The power in Mass is in the House and Senate which have strong, some say way too strong, political clout. They would never run for office of Governor which is a step back. Right now with Patrick Governor, DiMasi still reigns all the power. So Republicans run these somewhat moderate candidates like Weld and Celluci and Volpes who are very moderate. Mitt lied to take advantage of this. Along with O'Brien(another one of those weak Dems) running a poor campaign it was doomsday for dems.
