What if McCain won in 2000?
Let's say John McCain had won the presidency in 2000. Would we have gone to Iraq? We know that GWB had an obsession from day one. What else could have been done differently if we didn't have ol' Georgie in the White House?

1. We'd still be in Iraq if we had John in 2001...
His thirst for blood surpasses Dubya's.

2. I don't think we would have gone to Iraq -- McCain wouldn't have fabricated
"proof".

6. Yes he would have...
His only complaint about this whole war is how the initial stages of the occupation were "mishandled".

He has said this war was a good idea. McCain is dangerous.

11. What would have been his rationale? It was Bush who "discovered" that
Saddam had WMD and a close, personal relationship with OBL.

14. If you think about it, Bush only "discovered" it because the Thuggery
briefed him.

The same Thugs would have briefed McCain.

12. I'd guess no
I think Bush was recruited to run, so that he would invade Iraq.

That's the only reason "dumb-ass" is in office.

is really important when you do something terribly wrong and pointless and immoral...

8. He wasn't controlled by the NeoCons. So who knows?
It all depends on how he would have reacted to The Memo and the Hart Whoever report. I think he would have been more awake than *.

24. Doubtful.
If Gore can only draw even with a idiot like Bush, just imagine how he would do against a more capable candidate like McCain.

25. Don't know how thing would have turn out
If McCain had won in 2000. Bet there would not have been as many threads on DU about starting a war without having served in one though.

26. Good point there.
McCain went through some sh*t, even before he was shot down. Anyone who's been in the Navy in the last 30 years or so has seen the "Fire on the Forrestal" training film. A lot of the same footage is available on the Discovery or History or Learning Channel show, as well. When the first rocket cooked off and launched itself on the flight deck, McCain was in the plane it hit. He got to climb out his canopy, step out to the nose of his plane, and jump to the deck through a lake of fire.

Although the Forrestal was out of commission for quite a while, he went on to another ship and continued the mission.

I don't like a lot of his politics, but I will say he's not a quitter.
