I thought HBO wasn't running a new one tonight just because of the Oscars. But I'm with you...Rome first, though I may plug in a small portable just to be sure I don't miss Al.

(ON EDIT) - Just checked...reruns of ROME tonight. Episode 13 at 8:00, 14 at 9:00. Sorry.

7. I'm an "other", too.
I always watch the freakin' Oscars cause I'm a movie junkie but tonight will be especially entertaining just like the Grammy's were when The Chicks won big and Al Gore and Queen Laftifa made a surprise entrance to present the best rocknroll album to The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I love the big Hollywood Liberals..they got more Heart than the so-called "heartland".

It's an HBO series about, well...ROME. Great acting, incredible sets and cinematography, great story. Most entertaining "history" lesson you'll ever see. Top shelf, like most of HBO's other series.

41. Be forewarned, though...it's HBO, so they don't spare much
It's mostly about the drama, but when they do violence, they aren't shy. Last week's episode was the proverbial epic battle scene and it was like Braveheart, but even stonger. The murder of Cicero was particularly nasty, even if it was only one or two seconds long. And they aren't afraid of nudity or foul language, either. But all that good stuff is part of what makes it so genuine. Again, it's not overly heavy with the violence, but when they do it, they make it pretty damned real.

42. Thanks for the forewarning re: sex and violence! But it
sounds fascinating. Is it all based on 'true' historical fact? Or fact and fiction?

47. I'm sure it must be largely fictionalized
Edited on Sun Feb-25-07 08:29 PM by Atman
Although the main historical points -- the battles, the marriages, the assassination of Caesar, the main historical points -- are based on history, there is no way the writers could actually know a lot of the interpersonal stuff portrayed. But yes, I find it endlessly fascinating, if sometimes tough to follow the large cast and all the different names.

58. Funny you should ask...
we got a glossy magazine from our cable provider (Charter) which had an interesting article about the production of"Rome"...

It seems that the two characters, Lucius Voorenus and Poulo who play two soldiers from Ceaser's vaunted "13th Legion" were derived from two soldiers mentioned by Ceaser himself in Caeser's Commentaries on the Galic Wars. The concept is pretty slick....what would Rome have been like as seen through the eyes of two common soldiers of the time....they built the personalities from there...

8. Gee, no "I will watch with ENTHUSIASM and am looking forward to it"
We watch every year, we have a huge party, because we have friends and family in the business. Working stiffs, mostly, not glamorous types, but that's how they feed their family. They're good people, too.

I don't generally see the films ahead of time (unless they've hit DVD or cable in a hurry or someone I know is in the credits) but many in our crowd have. We pick our favorites, make wildass guesses, and have a load of snacks and drinks. It's a great get-together, and we enjoy it....oftentimes, the only day of the year we see some folks is at our annual Oscar bash.

This poll seems weighted to the "HATE IT" crowd....IMO.

But I didn't mean it that way. My "enthusiasm" answer was the "nice diversion," though I guess that doesn't sound too enthusiastic, does it? I won't edit the poll now, unfair to the others who've voted. But your point is well taken.

for independent film. It was a GREAT show, and so much less pompous than the Oscars; humor and intelligence abounded. Little Miss Sunshine and Half Nelson won big, and I was able to learn about some more stupendous films that I now have to see.

I will probably just read on here who the winners were after.

Edited on Sun Feb-25-07 05:09 PM by SoCalDem
she went to the mall and bought a dress off the rack ( I think she said once, she paid $78.00) and bought a rhinestone necklace for $35.. She laughed when people asked "Who's your necklace by"?.. she's reported to have said.. "I don;t know, I threw away the card it came on "

gotta love Sally :)

I can't remember who, but I remember an article a few weeks ago saying that the average Chanel haute couture gown goes for around $50,000 up to $100,000.

Though major stars usually get them on loan.

the Oscars! I love movies, and am a bit of an old movie buff! I love the way they do the beginning montages, and it's usually a fun evening all around. This is just about the movies. I DON't watch the other award shows that have to do with TV shows. Now THAT is boring! Really Boring!
Artfulness is well awarded in films and I enjoy seeing esp. Indie films get recognition. Grab yur popcorn. It'll be good even without Gore, but I'm extra excited about that!!!!

Been watching every year since I was little.

The past few years, I've watched them at official Oscar Night America parties and have had a blast.

This year it's just me, my comfy house, and a bottle of champagne to toast another year of great film.

Al Gore
Tipper Gore
Jennifer Hudson
Eddie Murphy
Helen Mirren

and Best Song. Last year's slate of Best Songs sucked. Much better this year. I would like a Dreamgirls tune to win, but my money is on Melissa Etheridge since Gore will win one for his movie.

Oh, I forgot. I will want to see Ellen's opening monologue too.

43. Yes
I will watch and you want to know why?

Because...

There's no business
like show business.
There's no business I know.

Everything about it is appealing.
Everything the traffic will allow.
Nowhere will you have that happy feeling,
Then when you are stealing that extra bow.

There's no people
Like show people.
They smile when they are low.

Yesterday they told you
You would not go far.
That night you opened
and there you are.

Next day on your dressing room
they've hung a star.
Let's go on with the show.
Let's go on with the show!

And I say so unapologetically.

I love the human capacity for fantasy and storytelling. I love the awesome richness of the visual imagery that film makes available to all of us. I love the shared experience that films bring to our culture. Lots of people rarely, if ever, read great literature, but just about EVERYONE watches movies.

I love movies. And I will probably watch the Academy Awards show every year for the rest of my life.
