1. I am moved by their service, as by all of those that have fallen. |

I can never help but look at the ages, so many of them are younger than I, with so much life that could have been ahead of them. I can't help but imagine their families' grief--this war is screwed-up. Their brothers and sisters in arms should not be one day more there, let alone 36,500. To me, our invasion was over a lie, and our attempt at rebuilding was a shambles. True democracy for Iraq starts with Iraqis.Even if the US sends Rice and anyone else (Gates--game?), and they have a big sit-down and hammer something out--you know, old-fashioned politics by political means. (Not *other means*) This would be a peace progress--the thing this administration apparently hates. But they: the accountable parties, need to step it up, to save American lives. To be the grown-ups, and see this brutal loss of too-young life for what it is. Needless. We accomplish no good end, now. We simply maintain. Our guys and gals have done what militarily can be done--the next step is political. They should not die for their courage, where others thrive on their own lack of it.

The quandry the mlitary finds itself in is in some ways analogous to that of a labor union faced with accepting management abuse or going on strike. There has never been a strike that didn't call for sacrifice by the workers. It is a very tough call. So our "guys and gals" as you put it, soldier on, because not to do so would be mutiny. But there have, in fact, been justifiable mutinies.
The sad fact is that this entire administration appears to be a bunch of "Stepford Wives" at the best, and co-conspirators at the worst, intentionally prolonging this thing, intentionally continuing the carnage, because of the philsophy that a continual state of war is the way to keep the populace in line.
We are frogs in slowly heating water. We won't know it until we are already cooked.

3. thank you. The Afghan war ones are particularly forgotten |

(I don't even know the total # for that conflict - at least we know the 4000+ for Iraq).
Most younger than me. A few much older than me. I noticed a few that died of wounds from a few years ago :(

Link below.
The numbers are "only numbers," of course, but they are posted on the homepage, and generally no more than a day old.
