Afghan ministry denies evidence of depleted uranium

KABUL, April 20 (Reuters) - The Afghan Public Health Ministry denied on Sunday a media report that there was evidence of nuclear contamination in the Tora Bora mountains of eastern Afghanistan. snip

"We have decided to do a study to see what is going on. We will take samples of soil, rocks, water in different areas where the war had taken place in the past and look in the same area to see if there is an excess of malformed babies," Kakar said.

"It's then that we can tell you what is going on. But until then it is still speculation," he said.

He also cautioned that Afghanistan suffered from major health problems that could have been the cause of any possible rise in the number of cases of malformation.

"In Afghanistan, we have so many problems with nutritional deficiency, like folic acid. So it's difficult to tell if it's due to depleted uranium or due to some nutritional problems or some other genetic issues," he said. (Reporting by Tan Ee Lyn; Editing by Sanjeev Miglani)

3. I think they want to deny that there is any nukes at all.. Most of the people

serving in the wars as soldiers do not understand the temerity of the weapons they are firing.. They took that subject out of training because it is just that bad. I have spoken with quite a few young men who don't have a clue as to the danger they are putting their own lives in and the innocent lives around them.

dust particles are absolutely horrible for a body. And it does do radioactive damage. We and our children's children's childrens' childrens.. and beyond will still be dealing with the after effects. The dust particles have begun to spread into Europe. The United Nations has declared DU a weapon of mass destruction because of the lasting effects to innocent people's. Its not a big mushroom cloud, but million upon million of little tiny mushrooms.. that do effect life negatively. It should not be used.. Again google DU babies. Look at the cancer rates among soldiers, children, and adults in areas that it has been used heavily.

7. I wouldn't write malnutrition off as a contributor, though...

I recall that the Bushies gave the Taliban $43 million as a reward for destroying Afghanistan's major cash crop one year. The poppy farmers are NOT the ones making the big bucks off the opium trade; they're probably like our farmers, who would fold up quick if they lost an entire year's production.

Put it down as environmental DU contamination exacerbated by two factors: malnutrition, and the growing of the food they DO have in soil that's contaminated by DU.
